1. A tissue acquisition and fixation system, comprising:

  • an elongate shaft having proximal and distal ends;

    a staple applying assembly having a proximal end coupled to the distal end of the elongate shaft and having first and second jaws, at least one of the jaws being movable such that the first and second jaws have an open position for receiving tissue and a closed position for engaging tissue, the first and second jaws being effective to apply at least one staple to tissue engaged between the first and second jaws; and

    a tissue acquisition member coupled to the staple applying assembly by a linkage mechanism, the tissue acquisition member being effective to engage tissue and to position the engaged tissue between the first and second jaws;

    wherein the linkage mechanism is configured to move the tissue acquisition member between a first position that is longitudinally offset and proximal to the staple applying assembly, and a second position that is longitudinally adjacent to the staple applying assembly while maintaining a parallel orientation between a longitudinal axis of the tissue acquisition member and a longitudinal axis of the staple applying assembly.
