Abstract

A housing for a handheld computing device can include an outer shell having a base and a sidewall connected to a periphery of the base, the sidewall having a port configured to receive a button and the outer shell having an inner surface and an outer surface and a backing plate connected to the inner surface of the outer shell, the backing plate having a front edge and a rear edge, the front edge being positioned a predetermined height above the base, the rear edge being positioned adjacent to the base, the backing plate being positioned adjacent to the sidewall having the port and spaced apart from the sidewall by a predetermined distance to provide rigidity to the button and to define a datum for positioning a component within the housing.

Claims

1. A housing for a handheld computing device, comprising:

an outer shell having a base and a sidewall connected to a periphery of the base, wherein the sidewall has a port configured to receive a button, and wherein the outer shell has an inner surface and an outer surface; and

a backing plate connected to the inner surface of the outer shell, wherein the backing plate has a front edge and a rear edge, wherein the front edge is positioned a predetermined height above the base, wherein the rear edge is positioned adjacent to the base, wherein the backing plate is positioned adjacent to the sidewall having the port and is spaced apart from the sidewall by a predetermined distance to provide rigidity to the button to maintain consistent button behavior and to define a datum for positioning a battery within the housing, wherein, to ground a flexible circuit to a printed circuit board, at least a portion of the flexible circuit is routed from beneath the battery to a position on a front side of the battery, and wherein the backing plate includes an elongate recessed area extending between a raised portion and a bottom edge of the backing plate configured to allow the flexible circuit to be bent over a front and/or rear edge of the recessed area.

2. The housing of claim 1, wherein the datum is positioned in a central portion of the backing plate.

The housing of claim 1, wherein the backing plate is oriented so that a plane extending through the rear edge and the front edge is substantially perpendicular to the base, wherein the button is a rocker button, wherein the backing plate comprises recessed areas configured to accommodate depression of opposing sides of the rocker button, and wherein the backing plate comprises a raised portion configured to provide rigidity to the rocker button.

The housing of claim 2, further comprising at least two screw bosses connected to the base and each having a threaded aperture, wherein the backing plate includes two apertures aligned with the threaded apertures for connecting the backing plate to the screw bosses, wherein a rear edge corresponding to the recessed area is selectively positioned relative to a base of the outer shell to define a predefined gap between the rear edge of the backing plate and the base, wherein the predefined gap is dimensioned to accommodate a thickness of the flexible circuit, wherein the rear edge of the backing plate substantially clamps the flexible circuit to the base, and wherein the front edge of the recessed area provides a path for positioning the flexible circuit.

The housing of claim 1, wherein the outer shell has a thickness of less than about 0.3 millimeters and further comprising a polymeric portion nanomolded on the inner surface of the sidewall, wherein the polymeric portion includes a shelf extending inward from the sidewall, and wherein the front edge of the backing plate is positioned below the shelf.

The housing of claim 1, wherein the port is configured to receive a rocker button, and wherein the front edge of the backing plate includes a raised portion having a predetermined width configured to provide rigidity to a middle portion of the rocker button while not interfering with a depression of opposing sides of the rocker button.

7. The housing of claim 1, further comprising:

two L-shaped brackets connected to the base, one of the L-shaped brackets being positioned proximate to a top end of the backing plate to provide rigidity to a top portion of the backing plate, and one of the L-shaped brackets being positioned proximate to a bottom end of the backing plate to provide rigidity to a bottom portion of the backing plate; and

at least two screw bosses connected to the base and each having a threaded aperture, wherein the backing plate includes two apertures aligned with the threaded apertures for connecting the backing plate to the screw bosses.

The housing of claim 1, wherein a distance between a sidewall and bottom portion of the backing plate associated with a recessed area is dimensioned to accommodate a predetermined bending radius of a flexible circuit connected to a printed circuit board, wherein the rear edge of the backing plate secures the flexible circuit in a predetermined position beneath the battery while the front and rear edges and of backing plate provide a reference for the flexible circuit to be bent around to ensure a proper bend radius.

9. A handheld computing device, comprising:

a first screen including a first display; and

a second screen including a second display, the second screen rotatably connected to the first screen, wherein at least one of the first screen or the second screen includes;

an outer shell having a base and a sidewall connected to a periphery of the base, wherein the sidewall has a port configured to receive a button, and wherein the outer shell has an inner surface and an outer surface; and

a backing plate connected to the inner surface of the outer shell, wherein the backing plate has a front edge and a rear edge, wherein the front edge is positioned a predetermined height above the base, wherein the rear edge is positioned adjacent to the base, wherein the backing plate is positioned adjacent to the sidewall having the port and is spaced apart from the sidewall by a predetermined distance to provide rigidity to the button to maintain consistent button behavior and to define a datum for positioning a battery within the housing, wherein, to ground a flexible circuit to a printed circuit board, at least a portion of the flexible circuit is routed from beneath the battery to a position on a front side of the battery, and wherein the backing plate includes an elongate recessed area extending between a raised portion and a bottom edge of the backing plate configured to allow the flexible circuit to be bent over a front and/or rear edge of the recessed area.

10. The handheld computing device of claim 9, wherein the datum is positioned in a central portion of the backing plate.

The handheld computing device of claim 9, wherein the backing plate is oriented so that a plane extending through the rear edge and the front edge is substantially perpendicular to the base, wherein the button is a rocker button, wherein the backing plate comprises recessed areas configured to accommodate depression of opposing sides of the rocker button, and wherein the backing plate comprises a raised portion configured to provide rigidity to the rocker button.

The handheld computing device of claim 9, wherein a rear edge corresponding to the recessed area is selectively positioned relative to a base of the outer shell to define a predefined gap between the rear edge of the backing plate and the base, wherein the predefined gap is dimensioned to accommodate a thickness of the flexible circuit, wherein the rear edge of the backing plate substantially clamps the flexible circuit to the base, and wherein the front edge of the recessed area provides a path for positioning the flexible circuit.

The handheld computing device of claim 9, further comprising a polymeric portion nanomolded on the inner surface of the sidewall, wherein the polymeric portion includes a shelf extending inward from the sidewall, and wherein the front edge of the backing plate is positioned below the shelf and further comprising at least two screw bosses connected to the base and each having a threaded aperture, wherein the backing plate includes two apertures aligned with the threaded apertures for connecting the backing plate to the screw bosses.

The handheld computing device of claim 9, wherein the port is configured to receive a rocker button, and wherein the front edge of the backing plate includes a raised portion having a predetermined width configured to provide rigidity to a middle portion of the rocker button while not interfering with a depression of opposing sides of the rocker button.

The handheld computing device of claim 9, further comprising two L-shaped brackets connected to the base, one of the L-shaped brackets being positioned proximate to a top end of the backing plate to provide rigidity to a top portion of the backing plate, and one of the L-shaped brackets being positioned proximate to a bottom end of the backing plate to provide rigidity to a bottom portion of the backing plate.

The handheld computing device of claim 9, wherein a distance between a sidewall and bottom portion of the backing plate associated with a recessed area is dimensioned to accommodate a predetermined bending radius of a flexible circuit connected to a printed circuit board, wherein the rear edge of the backing plate secures the flexible circuit in a predetermined position beneath the battery while the front and rear edges and of backing plate provide a reference for the flexible circuit to be bent around to ensure a proper bend radius.

17. A handheld computing device, comprising:

a screen including a first display, wherein the screen includes;

an outer shell having a base and a sidewall connected to a periphery of the base, wherein the outer shell has an inner surface and an outer surface; and

a backing plate connected to the inner surface of the outer shell, wherein the backing plate has a front edge and a rear edge, wherein the front edge is positioned a predetermined height above the base, wherein the rear edge is positioned adjacent to the base, wherein the backing plate is positioned adjacent to the sidewall having the port and is spaced apart from the sidewall by a predetermined distance to define a datum for positioning a battery within the housing, wherein a distance between a sidewall and bottom portion of the backing plate associated with a recessed area is dimensioned to accommodate a predetermined bending radius of a flexible circuit connected to a printed circuit board, wherein the rear edge of the backing plate secures the flexible circuit in a predetermined position beneath the battery while the front and rear edges and of backing plate provide a reference for the flexible circuit to be bent around to ensure a proper bend radius.

18. The handheld computing device of claim 17, wherein the sidewall comprises a port configured to receive a button, and wherein the sidewall is spaced apart from the sidewall by a predetermined distance to provide rigidity to the button to maintain consistent button behavior.

19. The handheld computing device of claim 17, wherein, to ground the flexible circuit to a printed circuit board, at least a portion of the flexible circuit is routed from beneath the battery to a position on a front side of the battery, and wherein the elongate recessed area extends between a raised portion and a bottom edge of the backing plate and is configured to allow the flexible circuit to be bent over a front and/or rear edge of the recessed area.

The handheld computing device of claim 17, wherein a rear edge corresponding to the recessed area is selectively positioned relative to a base of the outer shell to define a predefined gap between the rear edge of the backing plate and the base, wherein the predefined gap is dimensioned to accommodate a thickness of the flexible circuit, wherein the rear edge of the backing plate substantially clamps the flexible circuit to the base, and wherein the front edge of the recessed area provides a path for positioning the flexible circuit.
