Abstract

An apparatus for performing a microwave ablation procedure is provided. The apparatus includes a catheter including an open proximal end and a closed distal end configured to percutaneously access tissue. A directional microwave antenna probe adapted to connect to a source of microwave energy selectively couples to the catheter. The directional microwave antenna is rotatable within the catheter for directing the emission of microwave energy therefrom to tissue.

Claims

1. A system for performing a microwave ablation procedure, comprising:

a source of microwave energy;

a catheter including an open proximal end and a closed distal end configured to percutaneously access tissue, the catheter defining a lumen therethrough; and

a directional microwave antenna probe adapted to connect to the source of microwave energy and configured to selectively couple to and rotate within the lumen of the catheter for directing an emission of microwave energy from the directional microwave antenna probe to tissue, the directional microwave antenna probe including a shaft defining a longitudinal fluid lumen therethrough, the longitudinal fluid lumen having a proximal end in fluid communication with a fluid port disposed on a proximal end of the shaft and a distal end in fluid communication with an opening defined through a distal end of the shaft such that the longitudinal fluid lumen of the directional microwave antenna probe is fluidly coupled to the lumen of the catheter.

2. The system according to claim 1, wherein the catheter is made from a radiofrequency transparent material.

3. The system according to claim 2, wherein the radiofrequency transparent material is selected from the group consisting of fiberglass and high temperature composite plastic.

4. The system according to claim 1, wherein the closed distal end of the catheter is made from a material selected from the group consisting of metal, ceramic and plastic.

5. The system according to claim 1, wherein the catheter includes a flexible shaft operably disposed between the open proximal end and the closed distal end of the catheter and the lumen of the catheter extends along a length of the flexible shaft.

6. The system according to claim 5, wherein the catheter includes a port disposed adjacent the open proximal end of the catheter and the lumen of the catheter is in fluid communication with the port of the catheter.

The system according to claim 1, wherein a diaphragm is operably disposed at the open proximal end of the catheter and is configured to provide a fluid-tight seal between the catheter and the directional microwave antenna probe when the catheter and the directional microwave antenna probe are operably coupled to one another.

8. The system according to claim 1, further including an image guidance device.

9. The system according to claim 8, wherein the image guidance device is selected from the group consisting of a CAT scan device, an ultra sound device and a magnetic imaging device.

10. The system according to claim 1, wherein the catheter is configured to selectively receive a rigid introducer sheath configured to add structural support to the catheter and enhance visibility thereof during image-aided placement of the catheter.

11. The system according to claim 1, wherein the distal end of the shaft is flared.

12. The system according to claim 1, further comprising a perforated dielectric window coupled to the distal end of the shaft of the directional microwave antenna probe and disposed within the opening of the distal end of the shaft of the directional microwave antenna probe.

13. An apparatus for performing a microwave ablation procedure, comprising:

a catheter including an open proximal end and a closed distal end configured to percutaneously access tissue, the catheter defining a lumen therethrough; and

a directional microwave antenna probe adapted to connect to a source of microwave energy and configured to selectively couple to and rotate within the lumen of the catheter for directing an emission of microwave energy from the directional microwave antenna probe to tissue, the directional microwave antenna probe including a shaft defining a longitudinal fluid lumen therethrough, the longitudinal fluid lumen having a proximal end in fluid communication with a fluid port disposed on a proximal end of the shaft and a distal end in fluid communication with an opening defined through a distal end of the shaft such that the longitudinal fluid lumen of the directional microwave antenna probe is fluidly coupled to the lumen of the catheter.
