Abstract

Power supply systems and methods for controlling such systems are provided. One power supply system includes a generator set configured to provide an electrical output to an electrical bus, over which power is supplied to heavy equipment. The power supply system further includes a computerized controller configured to be coupled to an energy storage element, wherein the computerized controller is configured to couple the energy storage element to the electrical bus in advance of a predicted increase in demand upon the electrical bus to maintain a substantially constant voltage on the electrical bus during the predicted increase in demand and prevent a drop in voltage on the electrical bus that would otherwise result from the predicted increase in demand. The predicted increase in demand is anticipated by the computerized controller as forthcoming based upon extrapolation, at least in part, from data related to a past operation of the heavy equipment.

Claims

1. A power supply system configured to supply power to heavy equipment, the power supply system comprising:

a generator set configured to provide an electrical output to an electrical bus over which power is supplied to the heavy equipment; and

a computerized controller configured to be coupled to an energy storage element, wherein the computerized controller is configured to couple the energy storage element to the electrical bus in advance of a predicted increase in demand upon the electrical bus to maintain a substantially constant voltage on the electrical bus during the predicted increase in demand and prevent a drop in voltage on the electrical bus that would otherwise result from the predicted increase in demand,

wherein the predicted increase in demand is anticipated by the computerized controller as forthcoming based upon extrapolation, at least in part, from data related to a past operation of the heavy equipment.

2. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the computerized controller is configured to decouple the energy storage element from the electrical bus when the energy storage element reaches a capacity.

3. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the energy storage element comprises an ultra-capacitor.

The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the data based upon which the computerized controller anticipates the predicted increase in demand is data related to a past operation of one of the same heave equipment to which the power supply is configured to supply power or other heavy equipment configured to perform one or more same operations as the heavy equipment to which the power supply is configured to supply power.

5. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the energy storage element receives energy from the generator set to charge the energy storage element when demand upon the electrical bus is less than the electrical output of the generator set.

6. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the data used by the computerized controller for anticipation of the predicted increase in demand comprises data associated with an immediately preceding operation of the heavy equipment.

The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the heavy equipment is designed to operate in a substantially repetitive cycle, and wherein the data used by the computerized controller for anticipation of the predicted increase in demand comprises data associated with a previous iteration of the substantially repetitive cycle.

8. The power supply system of claim 1, wherein the data used by the computerized controller for anticipation of the predicted increase in demand comprises data associated with a plurality of preceding substantially repetitive cycles of the heavy equipment.

9. A power supply system configured to supply power to heavy equipment, the power supply system comprising:

a generator set configured to provide an electrical output to an electrical bus over which power is supplied to the heavy equipment;

an energy storage element configured to be coupled to the electrical bus; and

a computerized controller configured to be coupled to the energy storage element, wherein the computerized controller is configured to couple the energy storage element to the electrical bus in advance of a predicted increase in demand upon the electrical bus to maintain a substantially constant voltage on the electrical bus during the predicted increase in demand and prevent a drop in voltage on the electrical bus that would otherwise result from the predicted increase in demand,

wherein the predicted increase in demand is anticipated by the computerized controller as forthcoming based upon extrapolation, at least in part, from data related to a past operation of the heavy equipment.

10. The power supply system of claim 9, wherein the computerized controller is further configured to decouple the energy storage element from the electrical bus when the energy storage element reaches a capacity.

11. The power supply system of claim 9, wherein the energy storage element receives energy from the generator set to charge the energy storage element when demand upon the electrical bus is less than the electrical output of the generator set.

12. The power supply system of claim 9, wherein the energy storage element comprises an ultra-capacitor.

13. The power supply system of claim 9, wherein the data used by the computerized controller for anticipation of the predicted increase in demand comprises data associated with an immediately preceding operation of the heavy equipment.

The power supply system of claim 9, wherein the heavy equipment is designed to operate in a substantially repetitive cycle, and wherein the data used by the computerized controller for anticipation of the predicted increase in demand comprises data associated with a previous iteration of the substantially repetitive cycle.

15. The power supply system of claim 9, wherein the data used by the computerized controller for anticipation of the predicted increase in demand comprises data associated with a plurality of preceding substantially repetitive cycles of the heavy equipment.

16. A method of controlling power supply to heavy equipment comprising:

receiving, using a computerized controller, data related to a previous operation of the heavy equipment;

predicting, using the computerized controller, an increase in demand upon an electrical bus based upon the received data relating to a previous operation of the heavy equipment; and

coupling, using the computerized controller, an energy storage element to an electrical bus in advance of the predicted increase in demand upon the electrical bus to maintain a substantially constant voltage on the electrical bus during the predicted increase in demand and prevent a drop in voltage on the electrical bus that would otherwise result from the predicted increase in demand.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the data used by the computerized controller for predicting the increase in demand comprises data associated with an immediately preceding operation of the heavy equipment.

The method of claim 16, wherein the heavy equipment is designed to operate in a substantially repetitive cycle, and wherein the data used by the computerized controller for predicting the increase in demand comprises data associated with a previous iteration of the substantially repetitive cycle.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the data used by the computerized controller for predicting the increase in demand comprises data associated with a plurality of preceding substantially repetitive cycles of the heavy equipment.

20. The method of claim 16, further comprising decoupling the energy storage element from the electrical bus when the energy storage element reaches a capacity.
