Abstract

A dual screen user device and methods for generating user feedback to indicate transitional states of the device are disclosed. Feedback is provided to a user of the device concerning transitional states or changes in status of the device, such as whether the device is open or closed, whether a peripheral device has been connected to or disconnected from the device and whether the device has been powered up or down. In a preferred embodiment, one or more vibrators are used to generate vibration and/or audible signals to the user to indicate to the user the particular change in status of the device as it occurs.

Claims

1. A method for generating feedback to a user of a communication device to indicate a change in status of the communication device, the method comprising:

providing a multi-screen communication device that is selectively positionable in each of a closed state, open state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state, wherein, in the closed state, primary and secondary screens of the communication device are in a closed position;

in the open state, the primary and secondary screens are in the open position;

in the easel state, both the primary and secondary screens are viewable by the user and transverse to one another;

in the modified easel state, one of the primary and secondary screens is not viewable by the user while the other of the primary and secondary screens is viewable by the user and the primary and secondary screens are positioned transversely to one another;

in the inbound/outbound call state, the communication device is engaged in a telephone call; and

in the image/video capture state, the communication device is capturing one of an image and video; and

detecting, by at least one processor, that the communication device is transitioning from one of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state to another of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state based on input from two or more of a hall effect sensor, an accelerometer, a timer, a communications input trigger, and a video capture request input, wherein the detected transition triggers one or more of a hardware and/or software interrupt that is used to control and/or manage one or more functions of the multi-screen communication device associated with each of the closed state, open state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein, in the modified easel state, the one of the primary and secondary screen not viewable by the user is supported by a supporting surface and further comprising:

detecting, by the at least one processor, a first transition between a first to a second of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state by two or more of the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, timer, communications input trigger, and video capture request input;

determining, by the at least one processor, based on the detected first transition, that the communication device is being moved from the open position to the closed state or from the closed position to the open state;

detecting, by the at least one processor, a second transition between a first to a second of the one of the in a first one of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state by two or more of the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, timer, communications input trigger, and video capture request input;

determining, by the at least one processor, based on the detected second transition, that the communication device is being moved from the other of the open position to the closed state or from the closed position to the open state; and

in response to the determining based on the detected second state change, the at least one processor creating a signal as feedback to the user that the device has changed a state of the communication device, wherein the signal includes at least one of an audible or vibration signal generated by a feedback mechanism of the device in response to the signal created by the processor.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the signals generated comprise a plurality of different signals generated over different lengths of time and wherein the one or more functions comprise display of graphical information.

The method of claim 2, wherein the signals generated include a plurality of different signals having different audible pitches or audible frequencies and wherein a user can use a gesture to request an application transition to a different display mode on one or more of the primary and secondary screens and, when the one or more of the primary and secondary screens is available for the requested display mode, the multi-screen communication device moves the application through the application transition to the different display mode.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the portrait open, closed, and easel states to another one of the portrait open, closed, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor and timer.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from the portrait closed state to one of the portrait easel and modified easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the landscape open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to one of the portrait open, closed, modified easel, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the portrait open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to one of the landscape open, closed, modified easel, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the landscape open, closed, and easel states to another one of the landscape open, closed, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor and timer.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the landscape open, closed, modified easel, and easel state to a different one of the landscape easel and modified easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the portrait or landscape open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to the image/video capture state and wherein the transition is detected by a video capture request input.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the communication device transitions from one of the portrait or landscape open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to the inbound/outbound communication state and wherein the transition is detected by a communications input trigger.

13. A non-transitory computer readable medium storing computer executable instructions, that when executed by at least one processor, perform the method of claim 1.

14. A multi-display user device, comprising:

at least one microprocessor to execute instructions stored in memory;

a feedback mechanism of the multi-display user device to generate signals as feedback to a user;

a first display including a first display area;

a second display including second display area, wherein the first and second displays are selectively positionable in each of a closed state, open state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state, wherein, in the closed state, first and second displays are in a closed position;

in the open state, the first and second displays are in the open position;

in the easel state, both the first and second displays are viewable by the user and transverse to one another;

in the modified easel state, one of the first and second displays is not viewable by the user while the other of the first and second displays is viewable by the user and the first and second displays are positioned transversely to one another;

in the inbound/outbound call state, the multi-display user device is engaged in a telephone call; and

in the image/video capture state, the multi-display user device is capturing one of an image and video;

a non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon that include instructions configured to detect that the multi-display user device is transitioning from one of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state to another of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state based on input from two or more of a hall effect sensor, an accelerometer, a timer, a communications input trigger, and a video capture request input, wherein the detected transition triggers one or more of a hardware and/or software interrupt that is used to control and/or manage one or more functions of the multi-screen communication device associated with each of the closed state, open state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein, in the modified easel state, the one of the first and second displays not viewable by the user is supported by a supporting surface and further comprising instructions to:

detect a first transition between a first to a second of the one of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state by two or more of the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, timer, communications input trigger, and video capture request input;

determine, based on the detected first transition, that the multi-display user device is being moved from the open position to the closed state or from the closed position to the open state;

detect a second transition between a first to a second of the one of the in a first one of the closed state, open state, transition state, easel state, modified easel state, inbound/outbound communication state, and image/video capture state by two or more of the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, timer, communications input trigger, and video capture request input;

determine, based on the detected second transition, that the multi-display user device is being moved from the other of the open position to the closed state or from the closed position to the open state;

in response to the determining based on the detected second state change, create a signal as feedback to the user that the device has changed a state of the multi-display user device, wherein the signal includes at least one of an audible or vibration signal generated by a feedback mechanism of the device in response to the signal created by the processor.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the signals generated comprise a plurality of different signals generated over different lengths of time and wherein the one or more functions comprise display of graphical information.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the signals generated include a plurality of different signals having different audible pitches or audible frequencies and wherein a user can use a gesture to request an application transition to a different display mode on one or more of the primary and secondary screens and, when the one or more of the primary and secondary screens is available for the requested display mode, the multi-screen communication device moves the application through the application transition to the different display mode.

18. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the portrait open, closed, and easel states to another one of the portrait open, closed, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor and timer.

19. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from the portrait closed state to one of the portrait easel and modified easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the landscape open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to one of the portrait open, closed, modified easel, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the portrait open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to one of the landscape open, closed, modified easel, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the landscape open, closed, and easel states to another one of the landscape open, closed, and easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor and timer.

23. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the landscape open, closed, modified easel, and easel state to a different one of the landscape easel and modified easel states and wherein the transition is detected by input from the hall effect sensor, accelerometer, and timer.

24. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the portrait or landscape open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to the image/video capture state and wherein the transition is detected by a video capture request input.

25. The method of claim 14, wherein the multi-display user device transitions from one of the portrait or landscape open, closed, easel, and modified easel states to the inbound/outbound communication state and wherein the transition is detected by a communications input trigger.
