Abstract

Assemblies and methods for modifying an intraocular pressure of a patient'"'"'s one or both eyes are disclosed. The assemblies and methods can be used to treat, inhibit, or prevent ocular conditions such as glaucoma, high intraocular pressure, optic disc edema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, zero-gravity induced papilledema, and other optic pressure related conditions. An assembly can include a goggle including at least one cavity, a pump in fluid communication with the at least one cavity, and a control mechanism. The control mechanism can be operatively coupled to the pump and can maintain a target pressure or target pressure range in the at least one cavity, which, when the assembly is worn by a patient, is the area between a patient'"'"'s eye(s) and wall surfaces of the goggle. Controlling the pressure over the outer surfaces of the patient'"'"'s eye(s) can drive a desired change in the intraocular pressure of the eye(s).

Claims

1. An eye therapy assembly comprising:

a goggle, including at least one cavity, configured to surround and be spaced from an eye;

a pump in fluid communication with the at least one cavity; and

a control mechanism, operatively coupled to the pump, configured to receive a measured pressure that includes information about cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure and, using the measured CSF pressure information, set a target eye therapy pressure in the at least one cavity using the pump,

wherein the target eye therapy pressure in the at least one cavity is set by the control mechanism at a target level in an operating range from −

40 mmHg to 40 mmHg that is configured to treat intraocular (IOP) and CSF pressure.

2. The assembly of claim 1, further comprising at least one biosensor configured to measure the pressure, wherein the measured pressure includes information about CSF pressure.

3. The assembly of claim 2, wherein the at least one biosensor measures the pressure, wherein the measured pressure further includes information about IOP.

4. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the control mechanism comprises a control circuit configured to use the information to alter in a desired sequence the target pressure to the at least one cavity.

5. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the goggle includes one or more vents fluidly coupling the at least one cavity and a surrounding environment, the one or more vents controlled to adjust a pressure inside the at least one cavity of the goggle.

12. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the information further includes an indication of TOP.

13. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the target pressure is a function of both of an indication of IOP or an indication of CSF pressure.

14. The assembly of claim 2, wherein the at least one biosensor measures an indication of CSF pressure and an indication of IOP.

16. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the control mechanism is configured to additionally receive information about a pressure inside the at least one cavity of the goggle.

6. An eye therapy method comprising:

receiving a measured pressure that includes information about cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) pressure, the received pressure obtained from a patient to receive therapy of an eye using an assembly placed upon the patient, wherein the assembly includes a goggle having at least one cavity, a pump in fluid communication with the at least one cavity, and a control mechanism, over and around an eye, including spacing the goggle from a surface of the eye;

setting a target eye therapy pressure within the at least one cavity, using the information and using the control mechanism, at a target level in an operating range from −

40 mmHg to 40 mmHg that treats intraocular pressure and CSF pressure.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising using the information for altering in a desired sequence the target pressure within the at least one cavity.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein altering in a desired sequence the target pressure includes delivering a predetermined therapeutic pressure cycle to the eye.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein altering in a desired sequence the pressure in the operating range includes maintaining the pressure in an operating range from 5 mmHg to 20 mmHg (gauge).

10. The method of claim 6, wherein setting the target pressure includes reducing an intraocular pressure of the eye.

11. The method of claim 6, wherein the received pressure is obtained from a patient receiving glaucoma treatment of an eye.

15. The method of claim 6, wherein the received pressure is obtained from a patient receiving papilledema treatment of an eye.

17. The method of claim 6, comprising setting the target pressure within the at least one cavity additionally using information about a measured pressure within the at least one cavity.
