Abstract

An electrode assembly includes a first surface to be placed adjacent a person'"'"'s skin and a second surface including a plurality of reservoirs of conductive gel. The plurality of reservoirs of conductive gel are disposed on sections of the electrode assembly that are at least partially physically separated and may move at least partially independently of one another to conform to contours of a body of a patient. The electrode assembly is configured to dispense an amount of the electrically conductive gel onto the first surface in response to an activation signal and to provide for a defibrillating shock to be applied to the patient through the amount of the electrically conductive gel.

Claims

1. A therapy electrode system comprising:

a substrate including a first segment and a second segment, the first segment of the substrate configured to move at least partially independently from the second segment of the substrate;

a therapy electrode formed on the first segment; and

one of a slot or a gap passing through the substrate and extending from a central region of the substrate to an edge of the substrate distal from the central to region, the one of the slot or the gap physically separating at least a portion of the first segment of the substrate from the second segment of the substrate.

2. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the first segment includes a conductive gel reservoir at least partially filled with an electrically conductive gel.

3. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the second segment includes a fluid pressure source configured to cause an electrically conductive gel to be dispensed from a conductive gel reservoir.

4. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the first segment is coupled to the second segment by at least one tube.

5. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the first segment is configured to rotate relative to the second segment.

6. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the at least one tube forms a portion of a fluid channel in fluid communication between the fluid pressure source and the conductive gel reservoir.

7. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising a sensor disposed on the substrate and configured to monitor a physiological parameter of a patient.

The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of conductive gel reservoirs disposed on a first side of the substrate, a first conductive gel reservoir of the plurality of conductive gel reservoirs disposed in the first segment of the substrate and a second conductive gel reservoir of the plurality of the conductive gel reservoirs disposed in the second segment of the substrate.

The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising a first plurality of conductive gel reservoirs and a second plurality of conductive gel reservoirs, the first to plurality of conductive gel reservoirs being included in a first impedance reduction system configured to dispense a first amount of a first electrically conductive gel in response to a first activation signal, the second plurality of conductive gel reservoirs being included in a second impedance reduction system configured to dispense a second amount of a second electrically conductive gel in response to a second activation signal distinct from the first activation signal.

The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising a plurality of conductive gel reservoirs disposed on a first side of the substrate, a fluid conduit fluidly connecting the plurality of conductive gel reservoirs, an end of the fluid conduit being constructed to connect to a fluid pressure source.

11. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising a garment wearable by a patient and including a pocket configured to receive the therapy electrode system.

12. The therapy electrode system of claim 11, wherein at least one of the pocket and the therapy electrode include a feature discouraging insertion of the therapy electrode system into the pocket in an incorrect orientation.

13. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising an electrically conductive layer having a first surface disposed on a first side of the substrate and having a second surface configured to be disposed adjacent to a patient'"'"'s skin.

The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising at least one ECG sensing electrode configured to monitor an ECG signal of a patient, the at least one ECG sensing electrode being disposed on the first side of the substrate and electrically insulated from the electrically conductive layer.

15. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, further comprising a sensor configured to monitor a physiological parameter other than an ECG of a patient.

16. The therapy electrode system of claim 13, wherein the electrically conductive layer is configured to deliver a defibrillating shock to the patient.

17. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the substrate includes a plurality of connected segments that are configured to move at least partially independently of one another.

18. The therapy electrode system of claim 17, wherein one or more of the plurality of connected segments comprises at least one conductive gel reservoir.

19. The therapy electrode system of claim 1, wherein the therapy electrode system is in communication with a control unit disposed in a location separate from the therapy electrode system.
