1. A method of operating a wireless communication system comprising:

  • in a wireless communication network that provides network access to a wireless communication device;

    receiving an application request from the wireless communication device for application content provided by an application server that transfers keep-alive messages, wherein the application server also receives the application request and, in response to the application request, provides the application content to the wireless communication device over the wireless communication network;

    while the application server is providing the application content to the wireless communication device, receiving a first keep-alive message from the application server intended for delivery to the wireless communication device;

    determining whether a response to the first keep-alive message is necessary for the application server to continue providing the application content;

    upon determining that a response to the first keep-alive message is necessary, transferring a keep-alive message response to the application server on behalf of the wireless communication device.
