Abstract

A touchpad controller for a componentized intravascular ultrasound system is disclosed for acquisition and display of intravascular information in a catheter lab environment. The system includes a patient interface module (PIM) adapted to hold a catheter having an imaging probe located near a distal end, a control panel, a monitor for displaying images and patient data, and a processing unit. The touchpad controller facilitates use beneath a sterile drape and sensitivity to gloved touch. Furthermore, the touchpad controller is sized for handheld use during an imaging session. A rail mount facilitates easy attachment of the touchpad controller alongside a patient table.

Claims

1. A method of performing measurements on patient image data, the method comprising:

receiving, at a control panel, a selection of a frame of patient image data from among a plurality of frames of patient image data, the control panel including a housing sized and shaped for both handheld use and mounting on a rail adjacent a patient table, wherein the control panel further includes a plurality of control options, wherein the plurality of control options includes a first set including imaging action controls for controlling patient image data acquisition, a second set including navigation controls, wherein the navigation controls include a touch-sensitive sensor array configured to sense a touch of a user to allow the user to control positioning and operation of a cursor on a display in communication with the control panel, the touch-sensitive sensor array being further configured to accept a measurement input to make measurements on the frame of patient image data, and a third set including controls for reviewing the frame of patient image data, the third set including a measure control option that provides user access to a plurality of selectable measurement options;

receiving, at the control panel, a selection of a measurement option from a plurality of selectable measurement options;

executing a measurement on the frame of patient image data based on the selected measurement option when the measurement input corresponding to the selected measurement option is received on the touch-sensitive sensor array; and

displaying, on a display in communication with the control panel, the frame of patient image data and the measurement executed based on the selected measurement option.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving a selection of a frame of patient image data includes receiving a selection of at least one of:

a forward option to step through the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a back option to step through the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a pause option to stop a loop of the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a bookmark option during recording of the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a save frame option during live display of patient image data; and

a stop option during live display of patient image data.

The method of claim 1, wherein the first set of the plurality of control options defines a first region of the control panel, the second set of the plurality of control options defines a second region of the control panel, and the third set of the plurality of control options defines a third region of the control panel.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the control panel comprises a bedside controller.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of selectable measurement options includes at least one of a diameter measurement option, a length measurement option, and a border measurement option.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first set of the plurality of control options includes a record option operable to commence recordation of the plurality of patient image frames.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein receiving a selection of a frame of patient image data from among a plurality of frames of patient image data includes receiving a selection of an intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) image frame.

8. A method of performing measurements on patient image data, the method comprising:

receiving a first user selection on a bedside controller to select a frame of patient image data from among a plurality of frames of patient image data, wherein the bedside controller includes a plurality of control options, wherein the plurality of control options includes a first set including imaging action controls for controlling patient image data acquisition, a second set including navigation controls, wherein the navigation controls include a touch-sensitive sensor array configured to sense a touch of a user to allow the user to control positioning and operation of a cursor on a display in communication with the bedside controller, the touch-sensitive sensor array being further configured to accept a measurement input to make measurements on the frame of patient image data, and a third set including controls for reviewing the frame of the patient image data, the third set including a measure control option that provides user access to a plurality of selectable measurement options;

receiving a second user selection among the third set of the plurality of control options of the bedside controller, the second user selection being selection of the measure control option to select a measurement option out of a plurality of measurement options to which the measure control option provides access;

receiving a third user selection among the second set of the plurality of control options of the bedside controller, the third user selection being a user measurement input on the touch-sensitive sensor array corresponding to the selected measurement option; and

performing measurements on the frame of patient image data using a processing unit in communication with and separately spaced from the bedside controller based on the user measurement input and the selected measurement option of the plurality of measurement options.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein receiving a first user selection on a bedside controller to select a frame of patient image data includes receiving a first user selection of at least one of:

a forward option to step through the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a back option to step through the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a pause option to stop a loop of the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a bookmark option during recording of the plurality of frames of patient image data;

a save frame option during live display of patient image data; and

a stop option during live display of patient image data.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein receiving a user selection among the first set of the plurality of control options of the bedside controller to control acquisition of the plurality of frames of patient image data includes receiving a selection of a record option to commence recordation of a sequence of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) image frames.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein the IVUS image frames are acquired by an IVUS catheter communicatively coupled to the processing unit.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein IVUS catheter is a rotational IVUS catheter.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the IVUS catheter is an array-based IVUS catheter.

14. The method of claim 10, wherein the IVUS catheter is sized and shaped for cardiac use.

15. The method of claim 10, wherein the IVUS catheter is sized and shaped for peripheral use.

16. The method of claim 8, wherein the plurality of selectable measurement options includes at least one of a diameter measurement option, a length measurement option, and a border measurement option.

17. The method of claim 8, wherein the user measurement input is received while the bedside controller is mounted to the rail on the patient table.

18. The method of claim 8, wherein the user measurement input is received during handheld use of the bedside controller.

19. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

receiving a user selection among the first set of the plurality of control options of the bedside controller to control acquisition of the plurality of frames of patient image data.

20. A method of performing measurements on patient image data, the method comprising:

selecting a measurement option from a plurality of selectable measurement options of a bedside controller, the bedside controller including a housing sized and shaped for both handheld use and mounting on a rail adjacent a patient table, wherein the bedside controller further includes a plurality of control options, wherein the plurality of control options includes a first set including imaging action controls for controlling patient image data acquisition, a second set including navigation controls, wherein the navigation controls include a touch-sensitive sensor array configured to sense a touch of a user to allow the user to control positioning and operation of a cursor on a display in communication with the bedside controller, the touch-sensitive sensor array being further configured to accept measurement inputs to make measurements on acquired patient image data corresponding to the selected measurement option of the plurality of selectable measurement options, and a third set including controls for reviewing the acquired patient image data, the third set including a measure control option that provides user access to the plurality of selectable measurement options;

executing a measurement on the acquired patient image data based on the selected measurement option of the plurality of selectable measurement options when the measurement input corresponding to the selected measurement option is received on the touch-sensitive sensor array; and

displaying the acquired patient image data and the measurement executed based on the selected measurement option of the plurality of selectable measurement options on a display in communication with the bedside controller.
