Abstract

An improved technique for acoustic sensing involves, in one embodiment, launching into a medium, a plurality of groups of pulse-modulated electromagnetic-waves. The frequency of electromagnetic waves in a pulse within a group differs from the frequency of the electromagnetic waves in another pulse within the group. The energy scattered by the medium is detected and, in one embodiment, may be used to determine a characteristic of the environment of the medium. For example, if the medium is a buried optical fiber into which light pulses have been launched in accordance with the invention, the presence of acoustic waves within the region of the buried fiber can be detected.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

launching into a medium a first pair of electromagnetic waves comprising a first electromagnetic wave and a second electromagnetic wave having a common pulse width, a frequency of the first electromagnetic wave being different than a frequency of the second electromagnetic wave; and

sampling a first signal associated with a scattering by the medium of the first pair of electromagnetic waves based on the common pulse width by extracting phase information including complex signals corresponding to a plurality of fixed locations along the medium.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the medium is an optical fiber.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the frequency of the first electromagnetic wave and the frequency of the second electromagnetic wave are in the optical spectrum.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein an amplitude and a phase of the first signal are affected by an acoustic disturbance near the medium.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

launching into the medium a second pair of electromagnetic waves comprising a third electromagnetic wave and a fourth electromagnetic wave having the common pulse width, a frequency of the third electromagnetic wave being different than a frequency of the fourth electromagnetic wave; and

sampling the second signal associated with a scattering by the medium of the second pair of electromagnetic waves based on the common pulse width.

The method of claim 5, wherein the medium is associated with a round trip time, the second pair of electromagnetic waves is launched at a time that is less than the round trip time after the first pair of electromagnetic waves is launched, and a frequency difference between the first and second electromagnetic waves is different from a frequency difference between the third and fourth electromagnetic waves.

The method of claim 5, wherein the medium is associated with a round trip time, the second pair of electromagnetic waves is launched at a time that is more than the round trip time after the first pair of electromagnetic waves is launched, and a frequency difference between the first and second electromagnetic waves is equal to a frequency difference between the third and fourth electromagnetic waves.

8. A system comprising:

means for launching into a medium a first pair of electromagnetic waves comprising a first electromagnetic wave and a second electromagnetic wave having a common pulse width, a frequency of the first electromagnetic wave being different than a frequency of the second electromagnetic wave; and

means for sampling a first signal associated with a scattering by the medium of the first pair of electromagnetic waves based on the common pulse width by extracting phase information including complex signals corresponding to a plurality of fixed locations along the medium.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the medium is an optical fiber.

10. The system of claim 8, wherein the frequency of the first electromagnetic wave and the frequency of the second electromagnetic wave are in the optical spectrum.

11. The system of claim 8, further comprising:

means for launching into the medium a second pair of electromagnetic waves comprising a third electromagnetic wave and a fourth electromagnetic wave having the common pulse width, a frequency of the third electromagnetic wave being different than a frequency of the fourth electromagnetic wave; and

means for sampling a second signal associated with a scattering by the medium of the second pair of electromagnetic waves based on the common pulse width.

The system of claim 11, wherein the medium is associated with a round trip time and the means for launching the second pair of electromagnetic waves comprises means for launching the second pair of electromagnetic waves at a time that is less than the round trip time after the means for launching the first pair of electromagnetic waves launched the first pair of electromagnetic waves, wherein a frequency separation of the second pair of electromagnetic waves is different from a frequency separation of the first pair of electromagnetic waves.

The system of claim 11, wherein the medium is associated with a round trip time and the means for launching the second pair of electromagnetic waves comprises means for launching the second pair of electromagnetic waves at a time that is more than the round trip time after the means for launching the first pair of electromagnetic waves launched the first pair of electromagnetic waves, wherein a frequency separation of the second pair of electromagnetic waves is equal to a frequency separation of the first pair of electromagnetic waves.

14. An apparatus comprising a non-transitory computer readable medium having instructions stored thereon that, in response to execution by a computing device, cause the computing device to control operations comprising:

launching into a medium a first pair of electromagnetic waves comprising a first electromagnetic wave and a second electromagnetic wave having a common pulse width, a frequency of the first electromagnetic wave being different than a frequency of the second electromagnetic wave; and

sampling a first signal associated with a scattering by the medium of the first pair of electromagnetic waves based on the common pulse width by extracting phase information including complex signals corresponding to a plurality of fixed locations along the medium.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the frequency of the pulse modulated electromagnetic waves are in the optical spectrum.

16. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein an amplitude and a phase of the first signal are affected by an acoustic disturbance near the medium.

17. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the operations further comprise:

launching into the medium a second pair of electromagnetic waves comprising a third electromagnetic wave and a fourth electromagnetic wave having the common pulse width, a frequency of the third electromagnetic wave being different than a frequency of the fourth electromagnetic wave; and

sampling a second signal associated with a scattering by the medium of the second pair of electro magnetic waves based on the common pulse width.

The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the medium is associated with a round trip time, the second pair of electromagnetic waves is launched at a time that is less than the round trip time after the first pair of electromagnetic waves is launched, and a frequency difference between the first and second electromagnetic waves is different from a frequency difference between the third and fourth electromagnetic waves.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the medium is associated with a round trip time, the second pair of electromagnetic waves is launched at a time that is more than the round trip time after the first pair of electromagnetic waves is launched, and a frequency difference between the first and second electromagnetic waves is equal to a frequency difference between the third and fourth electromagnetic waves.
