Abstract

Advertisers are permitted to put targeted ads on page on the web (or some other document of any media type). The present invention may do so by (i) obtaining content that includes available spots for ads, (ii) determining ads relevant to content, and/or (iii) combining content with ads determined to be relevant to the content.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

obtaining, by one or more processing devices, a first set of document information extracted from a shallow crawl of a first set of untargeted Websites, the first set of untargeted Web sites comprising at least one document for which document information is unavailable, wherein, for the at least one document, the first set of document information comprises an estimate of document information for the at least one document, the estimate being based on a classification of the at least one document among the first set of untargeted Websites;

obtaining, by one or more processing devices, a second set of document information extracted from a deep crawl of a second set of targeted Websites, the second set of targeted Websites being different from the first set of untargeted Websites, the targeted Websites comprising Websites provided by content providers having available spots for receiving content, and the targeted Websites comprising content about which information has not been previously obtained or stored; and

serving, by one or more processing devices, content using at least one of the first set of document information or the second set of document information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a shallow crawl of an untargeted Website comprises crawling to a first level of Web Pages associated with the untargeted Website.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein a deep crawl of a targeted Website comprises crawling to a second level of Web pages associated with the targeted Website, and wherein the second level of Web pages is further down into a hierarchy of Web pages associated with a Website than the first level of Web pages.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first set of untargeted Websites is larger than the second set of targeted Websites.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the first set of document information extracted from the first set of the untargeted Websites comprises textual content of Web pages of the untargeted Websites crawled, and wherein the second set of document information extracted from the second set of the targeted Websites comprises textual content of Web pages of the targeted Websites crawled.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the second set of targeted Websites comprises static document information, and wherein the at least some of the second set of targeted Websites which comprises static document information is crawled before receiving a content request.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein at least some of the second set of targeted Websites comprises dynamic document information, and wherein the at least some of the second set of targeted Websites which comprises dynamic document information is crawled responsive to a content request.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

generating, automatically and for each of the targeted Websites, document relevance information from the second set of document information; and

storing, on one or more storage devices and for each of the targeted Websites, the document relevance information in association with an identifier of each targeted Website.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the content comprises online advertising.

10. One or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media storing instructions that are executable by one or more processing devices to perform operations comprising:

obtaining, by the one or more processing devices, a first set of document information extracted from a shallow crawl of a first set of untargeted Websites, the first set of untargeted Web sites comprising at least one document for which document information is unavailable, wherein, for the at least one document, the first set of document information comprises an estimate of document information for the at least one document, the estimate being based on a classification of the at least one document among the first set of untargeted Websites;

obtaining, by the one or more processing devices, a second set of document information extracted from a deep crawl of a second set of targeted Websites, the second set of targeted Websites being different from the first set of untargeted Websites, the targeted Websites comprising Websites provided by content providers having available spots for receiving content, and the targeted Websites comprising content about which information has not been previously obtained or stored; and

serving, by the one or more processing devices, content using at least one of the first set of document information or the second set of document information.

11. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein a shallow crawl of an untargeted Website comprises crawling to a first level of Web Pages associated with the untargeted Website.

The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 11, wherein a deep crawl of a targeted Website comprises crawling to a second level of Web pages associated with the targeted Website, and wherein the second level of Web pages is further down into a hierarchy of Web pages associated with a Website than the first level of Web pages.

13. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein the first set of untargeted Websites is larger than the second set of targeted Websites.

14. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein the first set of document information extracted from the first set of the untargeted Websites comprises textual content of Web pages of the untargeted Websites crawled, and wherein the second set of document information extracted from the second set of the targeted Websites comprises textual content of Web pages of the targeted Websites crawled.

15. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein at least some of the second set of targeted Websites comprises static document information, and wherein the at least some of the second set of targeted Websites which comprises static document information is crawled before receiving a content request.

16. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein at least some of the second set of targeted Websites comprises dynamic document information, and wherein the at least some of the second set of targeted Websites which comprises dynamic document information is crawled responsive to a content request.

17. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein the operations comprise:

generating, automatically and for each of the targeted Websites, document relevance information from the second set of document information; and

storing, on one or more storage devices and for each of the targeted Websites, the document relevance information in association with an identifier of each targeted Website.

18. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 10, wherein the content comprises online advertising.

19. A system comprising:

memory storing instructions that are executable; and

one or more processing devices to execute the instructions to perform operations comprising;

obtaining a first set of document information extracted from a shallow crawl of a first set of untargeted Websites, the first set of untargeted Web sites comprising at least one document for which document information is unavailable, wherein, for the at least one document, the first set of document information comprises an estimate of document information for the at least one document, the estimate being based on a classification of the at least one document among the first set of untargeted Websites;

obtaining a second set of document information extracted from a deep crawl of a second set of targeted Websites, the second set of targeted Websites being different from the first set of untargeted Websites, the targeted Websites comprising Websites provided by content providers having available spots for receiving content, and the targeted Websites comprising content about which information has not been previously obtained or stored; and

serving content using at least one of the first set of document information or the second set of document information.

20. The one or more non-transitory machine-readable storage media of claim 19, wherein a shallow crawl of an untargeted Website comprises crawling to a first level of Web Pages associated with the untargeted Website;

and

wherein a deep crawl of a targeted Website comprises crawling to a second level of Web pages associated with the targeted Website, and wherein the second level of Web pages is further down into a hierarchy of Web pages associated with a Website than the first level of Web pages.
