Abstract

User experience enhancements for conducting group communication sessions may include displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a state of a group communication session. Embodiments may include establishing a group communication channel with devices in a first operating mode in response to inputs on a user interface, detecting actuation of a target-based sliding lock mechanism on a touchscreen user interface display, and while the locking mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication channel in a second operating mode. Other embodiments may include initiating a group communication session in response to a user input, detecting actuation of a locking mechanism by a user on a user interface, sending a request to a server for a priority floor access in response to the detected actuation of the locking mechanism, and while the locking mechanism is actuated, maintaining a group communication channel with one or more devices in a priority access mode.

Claims

1. A method of conducting a group communication session on a wireless communication device, comprising:

establishing a group communication channel with one or more devices in a first operating mode in response to a user input on a user interface;

detecting actuation of a target-based sliding lock mechanism by a user on a touchscreen user interface display of the wireless communication device, wherein the target-based sliding lock mechanism is actuated by a user touching the touchscreen user interface display at a first location and sliding the touch to a selected target location of a plurality of target locations on the touchscreen user interface display, wherein each of the plurality of target locations is associated with a different operating mode of the group communication channel, and the selected target location is associated with a second operating mode of the group communication channel; and

while the lock mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

detecting a de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism; and

maintaining the group communication channel in the first operating mode in response to detecting the de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the second operating mode comprises a hands-free mode.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a hands-free mode state of the group communication session.

6. The method of claim 4, wherein maintaining the group communication channel in the hands-free mode comprises maintaining an open communication channel with the one or more devices while the lock mechanism is actuated and without requiring any further input on the user interface.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the second operating mode comprises a priority lock mode.

8. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a priority lock mode state of the group communication session.

9. The method of claim 7, further comprising:

sending a request to a server for priority floor access in the group communication session in response to detecting the actuation of the lock mechanism.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the second operating mode comprises a media lock mode.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a media lock mode state of the group communication session.

12. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

sending a request to a server for priority floor access for transmitting a media file to the one or more devices in response to detecting the actuation of the lock mechanism.

13. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a state of the group communication session.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

requesting control of a floor in the group communication session; and

displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the state of the floor in the group communication session.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

displaying on the display a visual representation of one or more members of a group in the group communication session;

determining a participation state of each member of the group; and

displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the participation state of each member of the group.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

displaying a reason for non-participation of a non-participating member of the group in the group communication session.

17. A method of conducting a group communication on a wireless communication device, comprising:

initiating a group communication session in response to a user input;

detecting an actuation of a priority locking mechanism by a user on a user interface, wherein the priority locking mechanism is indicative of a user request for priority floor access in the group communication session and the priority locking mechanism allows the user to lock the wireless communication device to one of a plurality of different priority levels;

sending a request to a server for a priority floor access in response to detecting the actuation of the priority locking mechanism; and

while the priority locking mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication session with one or more devices in a priority lock mode, wherein said group communication session is arbitrated based on a priority rule altered in response to the request such that priority access is given to the user in response to receiving the request at the server for priority floor access.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the priority locking mechanism comprises a target-based sliding lock mechanism on a touchscreen user interface display.

20. The method of claim 17, further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a priority access mode state of the group communication session.

21. A method of operating a server in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices, comprising:

receiving a request for a media lock from a first user device, wherein the media lock is requested by the first user device to provide priority access to a floor of the group communication session for transmission of a media file comprising at least one of an image file, a video file, a document and a presentation, while enabling other devices in the plurality of user devices to transmit voice data; and

locking control of the floor for transmission of the media file in response to the request for a media lock.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

receiving a message from the first user device that the media lock is no longer requested; and

arbitrating floor control for transmission of media files between the plurality of user devices using pre-determined priority rules in response to receiving the message from the first user device.

23. A method of operating a server in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices, comprising:

receiving a request for priority floor access from a first user device in a group communication session; and

maintaining the group communication session with one or more user devices in a priority lock mode, wherein maintaining comprises arbitrating floor control of the group communication session based on a priority rule altered in response to receiving the request such that priority access is given to the first user device in response to receiving the request for priority floor access.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

receiving a message from the first user device that priority floor access is no longer requested; and

arbitrating floor control of the group communication session without providing priority access to the first user device in response to receiving the message from the first user device.

25. A wireless communication device, comprising:

a touchscreen user interface display;

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the touchscreen user interface display and to the memory and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

establishing a group communication channel supporting a group communication session with one or more devices in a first operating mode in response to a user input on the touchscreen user interface display;

detecting actuation of a target-based sliding lock mechanism by a user on the touchscreen user interface display, wherein the target-based sliding lock mechanism is actuated by a user touching the touchscreen user interface display at a first location and sliding the touch to a selected target location of a plurality of target locations on the touchscreen user interface display, wherein each of the plurality of target locations is associated with a different operating mode of the group communication channel, and the selected target location is associated with a second operating mode of the group communication channel; and

while the lock mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode.

26. The wireless communication device of claim 25, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

detecting a de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism; and

maintaining the group communication channel in the first operating mode in response to detecting the de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism.

27. The wireless communication device of claim 25, wherein the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

28. The wireless communication device of claim 25, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that the second operating mode comprises a hands-free mode.

29. The wireless communication device of claim 28, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that maintaining the group communication channel in the hands-free mode comprises maintaining an open communication channel with the one or more devices while the lock mechanism is actuated and without requiring any further input on the touchscreen user interface display.

30. The wireless communication device of claim 25, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that the second operating mode comprises a priority lock mode.

31. The wireless communication device of claim 30, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a priority lock mode state of the group communication session.

32. The wireless communication device of claim 30, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

sending a request to a server for priority floor access in the group communication session in response to detecting the actuation of the lock mechanism.

33. The wireless communication device of claim 25, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations such that the second operating mode comprises a media lock mode.

34. The wireless communication device of claim 33, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a media lock mode state of the group communication session.

35. The wireless communication device of claim 33, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

sending a request to a server for priority floor access for transmitting a media file to the one or more devices in response to detecting the actuation of the lock mechanism.

36. The wireless communication device of claim 25, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

initiating a group communication session in response to a user input; and

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a state of the group communication session.

37. The wireless communication device of claim 36, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

requesting control of a floor in the group communication session; and

displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the state of the floor in the group communication session.

38. The wireless communication device of claim 36, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

displaying on the display a visual representation of one or more members of a group in the group communication session;

determining a participation state of each member of the group; and

displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the participation state of each member of the group.

39. The wireless communication device of claim 38, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

displaying a reason for non-participation of a non-participating member of the group in the group communication session.

40. A wireless communication device, comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

initiating a group communication session in response to a user input;

detecting an actuation of a priority locking mechanism by a user on a user interface, wherein the priority locking mechanism is indicative of a user request for priority floor access in the group communication session and the priority locking mechanism allows the user to lock the wireless communication device to one of a plurality of different priority levels;

sending a request to a server for a priority floor access in response to detecting the actuation of the priority locking mechanism; and

while the priority locking mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication session with one or more devices in a priority lock mode, wherein said group communication session is arbitrated based on a priority rule altered in response to the request such that priority access is given to the user in response to receiving the request at the server for priority floor access.

41. The wireless communication device of claim 40, wherein the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

42. The wireless communication device of claim 40, further comprising a touchscreen user interface display coupled to the processor, wherein the priority locking mechanism comprises a target-based sliding lock mechanism on the touchscreen user interface display.

43. The wireless communication device of claim 40, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a priority access mode state of the group communication session.

44. A server configured to operate in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices, comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

receiving a request for a media lock from a first user device, wherein the media lock is requested by the first user device to provide priority access to a floor of the group communication session for transmission of a media file comprising at least one of an image file, a video file, a document and a presentation, while enabling other devices in the plurality of user devices to transmit voice data; and

locking control of the floor for transmission of the media file in response to the request for a media lock.

45. The server of claim 44, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

receiving a message from the first user device that the media lock is no longer requested; and

arbitrating floor control for transmission of media files between the plurality of user devices using pre-determined priority rules in response to receiving the message that the media lock is no longer requested.

46. A server configured to operate in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices, comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory and configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations comprising;

receiving a request for priority floor access from a first user device in a group communication session; and

maintaining the group communication session with one or more user devices in a priority lock mode, wherein maintaining comprises arbitrating floor control of the group communication session based on a priority rule altered in response to receiving the request such that priority access is given to the first user device in response to receiving the request for priority floor access.

47. The server of claim 46, wherein the processor is configured with processor-executable instructions to perform operations further comprising:

receiving a message from the first user device that priority floor access is no longer requested; and

arbitrating floor control of the group communication session without providing priority access to the first user device in response to receiving the message that priority floor access is no longer requested.

48. A wireless communication device, comprising:

means for establishing a group communication channel to enable a group communication session with one or more devices in a first operating mode in response to a user input on a user interface;

means for detecting actuation of a target-based sliding lock mechanism by a user on a touchscreen user interface display of the wireless communication device, wherein the target-based sliding lock mechanism is actuated by a user touching the touchscreen user interface display at a first location and sliding the touch to a selected target location of a plurality of target locations on the touchscreen user interface display, wherein each of the plurality of target locations is associated with a different operating mode of the group communication channel, and the selected target location is associated with a second operating mode of the group communication channel; and

means for maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode while the lock mechanism is actuated.

49. The wireless communication device of claim 48, further comprising:

means for detecting a de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism; and

means for maintaining the group communication channel in the first operating mode in response to detecting the de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism.

50. The wireless communication device of claim 48, wherein the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

51. The wireless communication device of claim 48, wherein means for maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode comprises means for maintaining the group communication channel in a hands-free mode.

52. The wireless communication device of claim 48, further comprising means for displaying visual indication of a hands-free mode state of the group communication session.

53. The wireless communication device of claim 51, wherein means for maintaining the group communication channel in the hands-free mode comprises means for maintaining an open communication channel with the one or more devices while the lock mechanism is actuated and without requiring any further input on the user interface.

54. The wireless communication device of claim 48, wherein means for maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode comprises means for maintaining the group communication channel in a priority lock mode.

55. The wireless communication device of claim 54, further comprising means for displaying visual indication of a priority lock mode state of the group communication session.

56. The wireless communication device of claim 54, further comprising:

means for sending a request to a server for priority floor access in the group communication session in response to detecting actuation of the lock mechanism.

57. The wireless communication device of claim 48, wherein means for maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode comprises means for maintaining the group communication channel in a media lock mode.

58. The wireless communication device of claim 48, further comprising means for displaying visual indication of a media lock mode state of the group communication session.

59. The wireless communication device of claim 57, further comprising:

means for sending a request to a server for priority floor access for transmitting a media file to the one or more devices in response to detecting actuation of the lock mechanism.

60. The wireless communication device of claim 48, further comprising:

means for initiating a group communication session in response to a user input; and

means for displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a state of the group communication session.

61. The wireless communication device of claim 60, further comprising:

means for requesting control of a floor in the group communication session; and

means for displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the state of the floor in the group communication session.

62. The wireless communication device of claim 60, further comprising:

means for displaying on the display a visual representation of one or more members of a group in the group communication session;

means for determining a participation state of each member of the group; and

means for displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the participation state of each member of the group.

63. The wireless communication device of claim 62, further comprising:

means for displaying a reason for non-participation of a non-participating member of the group in the group communication session.

64. A wireless communication device, comprising:

means for initiating a group communication session in response to a user input;

means for detecting an actuation of a priority locking mechanism by a user on a user interface, wherein the priority locking mechanism is indicative of a user request for priority floor access in the group communication session and the priority locking mechanism allows the user to lock the wireless communication device to one of a plurality of different priority levels;

means for sending a request to a server for a priority floor access in response to detecting the actuation of the priority locking mechanism; and

means for maintaining the group communication session with one or more devices in a priority lock mode while the priority locking mechanism is actuated, wherein said group communication session is arbitrated based on a priority rule altered in response to the request such that priority access is given to the user in response to receiving the request at the server for priority floor access.

65. The wireless communication device of claim 64, wherein the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

66. The wireless communication device of claim 64, further comprising means for displaying visual indication of a priority access mode state of the group communication session.

67. The wireless communication device of claim 64, wherein the priority locking mechanism comprises a target-based sliding lock mechanism on a touchscreen user interface display.

68. A server configured to operate in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices, comprising:

means for receiving a request for a media lock from a first user device, wherein the media lock is requested by the first user device to provide priority access to a floor of the group communication session for transmission of a media file comprising at least one of an image file, a video file, a document and a presentation, while enabling other devices in the plurality of user devices to transmit voice data; and

means for locking control of the floor for transmission of the media file in response to the request for a media lock.

69. The server of claim 68, further comprising:

means for receiving a message from the first user device that the media lock is no longer requested; and

means for arbitrating floor control for transmission of media files between the plurality of user devices using pre-determined priority rules in response to receiving the message that the media lock is no longer requested.

70. A server configured to operate in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices, comprising:

means for receiving a request for priority floor access from a first user device in a group communication session; and

means for maintaining the group communication session with one or more user devices in a priority lock mode, wherein maintaining comprises arbitrating floor control of the group communication session based on a priority rule altered in response to receiving the request such that priority access is given to the first user device in response to receiving the request for priority floor access.

71. The server of claim 70, further comprising:

means for receiving a message from the first user device that priority floor access is no longer requested; and

means for arbitrating floor control of the group communication session without providing priority access to the first user device in response to receiving the message that priority floor access is no longer requested.

72. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a wireless communication device processor to perform operations comprising:

establishing a group communication channel to enable a group communication session with one or more devices in a first operating mode in response to a user input on a user interface;

detecting actuation of a target-based sliding lock mechanism by a user on a touchscreen user interface display of the wireless communication device, wherein the target-based sliding lock mechanism is actuated by a user touching the touchscreen user interface display at a first location and sliding the touch to a selected target location of a plurality of target locations on the touchscreen user interface display, wherein each of the plurality of target locations is associated with a different operating mode of the group communication channel, and the selected target location is associated with a second operating mode of the group communication channel; and

while the lock mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication channel in the second operating mode.

73. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 72, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

detecting a de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism; and

maintaining the group communication channel in the first operating mode in response to detecting the de-actuation of the target-based sliding lock mechanism.

74. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 72, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

75. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 72, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that the second operating mode comprises a hands-free mode.

76. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 75, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising displaying a visual indication of a hands-free mode state of the group communication session.

77. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 75, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that:

maintaining the group communication channel in the hands-free mode comprises maintaining an open communication channel with the one or more devices while the lock mechanism is actuated and without requiring any further input on the user interface.

78. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 72, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that the second operating mode comprises a priority lock mode.

79. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 78, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising displaying a visual indication of a priority lock mode state of the group communication session.

80. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 78, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

sending a request to a server for priority floor access in the group communication session in response to detecting the actuation of the lock mechanism.

81. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 72, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that the second operating mode comprises a media lock mode.

82. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 81, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising displaying a visual indication of a media lock mode state of the group communication session.

83. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 81, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

sending a request to a server for priority floor access for transmitting a media file to the one or more devices in response to detecting the actuation of the lock mechanism.

84. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 72, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

initiating a group communication session in response to a user input; and

displaying visual feedback on a display to indicate a state of the group communication session.

85. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 84, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

requesting control of a floor in the group communication session; and

displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the state of the floor in the group communication session.

86. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 84, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

displaying on the display a visual representation of one or more members of a group in the group communication session;

determining a participation state of each member of the group; and

displaying visual feedback on the display to indicate the participation state of each member of the group.

87. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 86, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising:

displaying a reason for non-participation of a non-participating member of the group in the group communication session.

88. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a wireless communication device processor to perform operations comprising:

initiating a group communication session in response to a user input;

detecting an actuation of a priority locking mechanism by a user on a user interface, wherein the priority locking mechanism is indicative of a user request for priority floor access in the group communication session and the priority locking mechanism allows the user to lock the wireless communication device to one of a plurality of different priority levels;

sending a request to a server for a priority floor access in response to detecting the actuation of the priority locking mechanism; and

while the priority locking mechanism is actuated, maintaining the group communication session with one or more devices in a priority lock mode, wherein said group communication session is arbitrated based on a priority rule altered in response to the request such that priority access is given to the user in response to receiving the request at the server for priority floor access.

89. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 88, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that the group communication session comprises a “

Push-To-Talk”

(PTT) communication.

90. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 88, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations such that the priority locking mechanism comprises a target-based sliding lock mechanism on a touchscreen user interface display.

91. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 88, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the wireless communication device processor to perform operations further comprising displaying a visual indication of a priority access mode state of the group communication session.

92. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a server processor configured to operate in a group communication session between a plurality of user devices to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request for a media lock from a first user device, wherein the media lock is requested by the first user device to provide priority access to a floor of a group communication session for transmission of a media file comprising at least one of an image file, a video file, a document and a presentation, while enabling other devices in the plurality of user devices to transmit voice data; and

locking control of the floor for transmission of the media file in response to the request for a media lock.

93. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 92, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the server processor to perform operations further comprising:

receiving a message from the first user device that the media lock is no longer requested; and

arbitrating floor control for transmission of media files among the plurality of user devices in the group communication session using pre-determined priority rules in response to receiving the message that the media lock is no longer requested.

94. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon processor executable instructions configured to cause a server processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request for priority floor access from a first user device in a group communication session; and

maintaining the group communication session with one or more user devices in a priority lock mode, wherein maintaining comprises arbitrating floor control of the group communication session based on a priority rule altered in response to receiving the request such that priority access is given to the first user device in response to receiving the request for priority floor access.

95. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 94, wherein the stored processor executable instructions are configured to cause the server processor to perform operations further comprising:

receiving a message from the first user device that priority floor access is no longer requested; and

arbitrating floor control of the group communication session without providing priority access to the first user device in response to receiving the message that priority floor access is no longer requested.
