1. A patient monitoring system, comprising:
- a noninvasive optical sensor configured to detect light attenuated by body tissue of a monitored patient and provide a detector signal indicative of one or more physiological parameters of the monitored patient based at least in part on the detected light;
a monitor configured to receive the detector signal and configured to operate in a plurality of applications, each of the applications including two or more user-selectable operation parameters separately configurable through a user interface, wherein the monitor is further configured to calculate a measurement output responsive to said detector signal; and
a single dedicated mechanical actuator configured to select one of the plurality of applications, wherein upon actuation of the single dedicated mechanical actuator, the monitor is automatically configured according to the two or more user-selectable operation parameters associated with the selected one of the plurality of applications, and wherein said automatic configuration of the monitor is not dependent upon the user interface.

Abstract
A patient monitoring system comprises a plurality of emitters configured to transmit light into a tissue site and a detector configured to receive the light after tissue absorption. The detector generates a signal responsive to the intensity of the light and communicates the signal to a monitor. An information element is readable by the monitor so as to identify an environment of use. An actuator may preset at least one user-selectable operational parameter of the monitor in response to the information element.

13. A method of configuring a patient monitor based at least in part on an environment of use of said patient monitor, the method comprising:
-
receiving from a noninvasive optical sensor electronic signals indicative of one or more physiological parameters of a monitored patient, said electronic signals indicative of light attenuated by body tissue of the monitored patient; receiving from an actuation of a single dedicated mechanical actuator of a patent monitor a monitor configuration input indicative of an application in said patient monitor, said patient monitor configured to operate in a plurality of applications, wherein upon said actuation of the single dedicated mechanical actuator, the patient monitor is automatically configured according to two or more user-selectable operation parameters based at least in part on the monitor configuration input, the two or more user-selectable operation parameters separately configurable through a user interface, wherein said automatic configuration of the patient monitor is not dependent upon the user interface; and processing with a signal processor said electronic signals according to the automatic configuration of the two or more user-selectable operation parameters to determine output measurements for the one or more physiological parameters of said monitored patient. - View Dependent Claims (14, 15, 16)
