Abstract

Methods and systems for vector combining power amplification are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a plurality of signals are individually amplified, then summed to form a desired time-varying complex envelope signal. Phase and/or frequency characteristics of one or more of the signals are controlled to provide the desired phase, frequency, and/or amplitude characteristics of the desired time-varying complex envelope signal. In another embodiment, a time-varying complex envelope signal is decomposed into a plurality of constant envelope constituent signals. The constituent signals are amplified equally or substantially equally, and then summed to construct an amplified version of the original time-varying envelope signal. Embodiments also perform frequency up-conversion.

Claims

1. An apparatus for RF power transmission, modulation, and amplification, comprising:

a bias circuit configured to generate a bias signal, wherein the bias circuit is configured to receive input information and to generate the bias signal according to the input information, wherein the input information comprises an in-phase data component or a quadrature data component;

a vector modulator configured to generate a constant envelope signal by multiplying the in-phase data component with a corresponding in-phase amplitude component and multiplying the quadrature data component with a corresponding quadrature amplitude component; and

an amplifier configured to amplify the constant envelope signal using the bias signal.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a second bias circuit configured to generate a second bias signal;

a second vector modulator configured to generate a second constant envelope signal; and

a second amplifier configured to amplify the second constant envelope signal using the second bias signal.

The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the second bias circuit is configured to receive second input information and to generate the second bias signal according to the second input information, wherein the second input information comprises the in-phase data component or the quadrature data component.

4. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the vector modulator is configured to generate the constant envelope signal from in-phase information.

5. The apparatus of claim 2, wherein the second vector modulator is configured to generate the second constant envelope signal from quadrature information.

6. The apparatus of claim 2, further comprising a vector power amplifier output coupled to an output of the amplifier and to an output of the second amplifier.

7. The apparatus of claim 6, wherein the vector power amplifier output is configured to output an output signal.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the amplifier comprises a multiple-input-single-output amplifier.

9. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the amplifier is configured to operate as a linear or a non-linear amplifier based on the bias signal.

10. A method, comprising:

generating a bias signal using a bias circuit, wherein the bias circuit is configured to receive input information and to generate the bias signal according to the input information, wherein the input information comprises an in-phase data component or a quadrature data component;

generating a constant envelope signal using a vector modulator by multiplying the in-phase data component with a corresponding in-phase amplitude component and multiplying the quadrature data component with a corresponding quadrature amplitude component; and

amplifying the constant envelope signal with an amplifier using the bias signal.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

generating a second bias signal using a second bias circuit;

generating a second constant envelope signal using a second vector modulator; and

amplifying the second constant envelope signal with a second amplifier using the second bias signal.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein generating the second bias signal comprises receiving second input information and generating the second bias signal according to the second input information, wherein the second input information comprises the in-phase data component or the quadrature data component.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein producing the constant envelope signal comprises producing the constant envelope signal from in-phase information.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein producing the second constant envelope signal comprises producing the second constant envelope signal from quadrature information.

15. The method of claim 11, further comprising generating an output signal by coupling an output from the amplifier to an output of the second amplifier.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein generating the output signal further comprises generating the output signal such that it includes in-phase and quadrature characteristics of information signals.

17. The method of claim 10, wherein amplifying the constant envelope signal comprises amplifying the constant envelope signal with a multiple-input-single-output amplifier.

18. The method of claim 10, wherein amplifying the constant envelope signal comprises amplifying the constant envelope signal either linearly or non-linearly based on the bias signal.
