Abstract

Apparatus for performing intraocular implant surgery, including surgical apparatus for performing intraocular implant surgery, an autorefraction device associated with the surgical apparatus, wherein the autorefraction device is configured to perform autorefraction on the aphakic eye to provide one or more aphakic refraction measurements, and a processor connected to the autorefraction device, wherein the processor is configured to process the aphakic refraction measurements and provide the user of the apparatus with information regarding the power of the intraocular lens.

Claims

1. A method for performing intraocular implant surgery, comprising:

extracting the native lens;

implanting a first intraocular lens of a first IOL power, the first IOL power being determined by a measurement performed on the eye before implanting the first intraocular lens;

while the patient remains in surgery, measuring refraction of the eye after implantation of the first intraocular lens to determine the extent of residual error in the refraction provided by the first intraocular lens.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of determining whether the residual error exceeds an acceptable level, and if so, continuing the surgery to implant a second intraocular lens of a second IOL power.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of determining whether the residual error exceeds an acceptable level, and if so, continuing the surgery to modify the optical state of the cornea to compensate for the residual error.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the first intraocular lens is removed and replaced with the second intraocular lens.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein a second intraocular lens is implanted, in addition to the first intraocular lens, to compensate for the residual error.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the measurement of refraction is performed with the patient in the same position in which the native lens was extracted.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the position of the patient is the supine position.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the power of the first intraocular lens is selected based on intraoperative measurement of refraction of the aphakic eye following extraction of the native lens.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the power of the first intraocular lens is selected based on pre-operative measurements of the phakic eye.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the power of the first intraocular lens is selected based on both pre-operative measurements of the phakic eye and intraoperative measurements of the aphakic eye.

11. The method of claim 1 wherein the method is used for patients that have previously undergone vision correcting refractive surgery.

12. The method of claim 8 wherein the determining of the power of the first intraocular lens comprises using a predictive model that is an empirically derived relationship between the refraction measurements and the power of the intraocular lens.

13. The method of claim 1 wherein the native lens is extracted using a surgical microscope and the refraction is performed using a device configured to be moved into place for making refraction measurements following extraction of the native lens.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein measuring refraction comprises autorefraction.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein autorefraction is performed by autoretinoscopy.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein measuring refraction comprises making a measurement using a wavefront-based device.
