1. A method of reducing the level of mercury and/or sulfur emitted into the atmosphere upon burning of coal, comprising adding remediation materials onto the coal and delivering the coal with the sorbent composition applied into a furnace for combustion, wherein the remediation materials comprise calcium oxides, calcium halogens, oxides of silicon, oxides of aluminum, oxides of iron, oxides of magnesium, oxides of sodium, and oxides of potassium.
