Abstract

A method and apparatus for streaming content to an access network in an interactive information distribution system. The method encapsulates the content in accordance to an Internet Protocol (IP). The content is then transcoded into a format supported by the access network, and streamed over a distribution network to a remote server or to a subscriber terminal that is coupled to the access network. The apparatus is embodied as stream caching server for streaming the content encapsulated within the packet to access networks via a stream distribution network in response to a request for content. A packet processor is coupled to the stream server for processing the encapsulated content within the IP packets into a format native to the access network.

Claims

1. A method, comprising:

identifying an access network from a plurality of access networks, the plurality of access networks supporting a plurality of different formats and communicatively connected to the computing device via a distribution network;

transcoding, by a computing device, data to be transmitted to a first format supported by the access network that is different from a second format supported by another of the plurality of access networks, resulting in transcoded data;

encapsulating, by the computing device, the transcoded data within at least one packet that is in a third format supported by the distribution network different from the first format; and

cause transmission of the at least one packet to the distribution network.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a necessary quality of service (QoS) level associated with the data to be transmitted; and

adapting the data to be transmitted such that the necessary QoS level associated with the data to be transmitted is maintained and a total bandwidth demand on an access network element of the access network does not exceed an available bandwidth of the access network element.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the adapting comprises adapting at least some of the data to be transmitted to produce corresponding reduced quality data.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the reduced quality data is produced in an information processing system prior to transmitting the data to be transmitted to the access network via the distribution network.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the transcoding comprises converting data from a format not supported by the access network to the first format.

6. The method of claim 3, wherein the adapting comprises a data bitrate reduction.

7. The method of claim 3, wherein the transcoding is determined according to a statistical multiplexing process.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein the adapting is performed according to metadata associated with the data to be transmitted.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the metadata comprises service provider parameters associated with the data to be transmitted.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the data to be transmitted comprises data of a first type and data of a second type, and wherein the method further comprises:

providing the data of the first type from a server configured to deliver data of the first type; and

providing the data of the second type from a server configured to deliver data of the second type.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

segmenting content data according to data type, resulting in the data of the first type and the data of the second type;

storing the data of the first type on the server configured to deliver the data of the first type; and

storing the data of the second type on the server configured to deliver the data of the second type,

wherein data type information is comprised within metadata associated with the data of the first type and within metadata associated with the data of the second type.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein the data of the first type comprises streaming data and the data of the second type comprises non-streaming data.

13. The method of claim 10, wherein the server configured to deliver the data of the first type comprises a stream caching server and the server configured to deliver the data of the second type comprises an http proxy server.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

synchronizing delivery from the server configured to deliver the data of the first type with the server configured to deliver the data of the second type.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the streaming data has a format according to one of a QuickTime format, an MPEG-2 format, an MPEG-4 format and an MPEG-7 format.

19. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying another access network from the plurality of access networks, wherein the another access network is different from the access network;

transcoding data to a fourth format supported by the another access network different from the first format and the third format, resulting in different transcoded data;

encapsulating the different transcoded data within at least one different packet that is in the third format; and

causing transmission of the at least one different packet to the distribution network.

22. The method of claim 2, wherein the determining and the adapting are repeatedly performed.

24. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving, by a data link converter, the at least one packet via the distribution network from the computing device;

extracting, by the data link converter, the transcoded data from the at least one packet; and

transmitting, by the data link converter, the transcoded data via the access network toward one or more client devices.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the data link converter is communicatively connected to the computing device via the distribution network, and the one or more client devices are communicatively connected to the data link converter via the access network.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the computing device is comprised in a local head-end.

27. The method of claim 25, wherein the first format is a Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) format, and the third format is an internet protocol (IP) format.

32. The method of claim 26, wherein the local head-end is communicatively connected to one or more remote head-ends via the distribution network, and wherein the method further comprises:

transmitting, by the computing device, a request to the one or more remote head-ends for the data to be transmitted;

receiving, by the computing device, the data to be transmitted prior to performing the transcoding and the encapsulating;

after causing the transmission of the at least one packet, receiving, by a data link converter, the at least one packet via the distribution network;

extracting, by the data link converter, the transcoded data from the at least one packet; and

transmitting, by the data link converter, the transcoded data via the access network toward one or more client devices.

16. A system, comprising:

at least one server communicatively connected to a plurality of access networks that support a plurality of different formats via a distribution network, the at least one server configured to at least provide data from a packet processor toward at least one of the plurality of access networks via the distribution network; and

the packet processor configured to at least;

identify the access network from the plurality of access networks;

transcode data to be transmitted to a first format supported by the access network that is different from a second format supported by another of the plurality of access networks, resulting in transcoded data;

encapsulate the transcoded data within at least one packet that is in a third format supported by the distribution network different from the first format supported by the access network; and

cause the at least one server to provide the at least one packet to the access network via the distribution network.

17. The system of claim 16, further comprising:

a data link converter configured to at least;

receive the at least one packet via the distribution network from the at least one server,

extract the transcoded data from the at least one packet, and

transmit the transcoded data via the access network toward one or more client devices.

23. The system of claim 16, wherein the packet processor is configured to:

determine a necessary quality of service (QoS) level associated with the data to be transmitted; and

adapt the data to be transmitted such that the necessary QoS level associated with the data to be transmitted is maintained and a total bandwidth demand on an access network element does not exceed an available bandwidth of the access network element.

18. A system, comprising:

at least one server communicatively connected to a plurality of access networks that support a plurality of different formats via a distribution network, the at least one server configured to at least provide data from a packet processor toward at least one of the plurality of access networks via the distribution network; and

a packet processor configured to at least;

transcode internet protocol (IP) data to a format supported by an access network, resulting in transcoded data;

encapsulate the transcoded data in at least one IP packet;

size the at least one IP packet according to at least one modulated channel; and

cause the at least one server to provide the at least one IP packet to the access network via the distribution network.

20. The system of claim 18, wherein the packet processor is configured to transcode the IP data into any one of the plurality of different formats.

21. The system of claim 18, wherein the packet processor is further configured to:

determine a necessary quality of service (QoS) level associated with the IP data; and

adapt the IP data such that the necessary QoS level associated with the IP data is maintained and a total bandwidth demand on an access network element of the access network does not exceed an available bandwidth of the access network element.

28. A method, comprising:

transcoding, by a computing device, data into transcoded data packets in a first format supported by an access network;

encapsulating the transcoded data packets into encapsulated data that is in a second format supported by a distribution network different from the first format; and

distributing, to the distribution network, the encapsulated data in the second format.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the transcoding comprises transcoding internet protocol (IP) data to the first format.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the encapsulating comprises encapsulating the transcoded data packets into at least one IP packet.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising:

sizing the at least one IP packet in accordance with at least one modulated channel.
