1. A gaming system comprising:

  • a housing;

    a plurality of input devices supported by the housing, said plurality of input devices including;

    (i) an acceptor,(ii) a validator, and(iii) a cashout device;

    at least one display device supported by the housing;

    at least one processor; and

    at least one memory device which stores a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to operate with the plurality of input devices and the at least one display device to, for a play of a game;

    (a) if a physical item is received via the acceptor;

    (i) identify, via the validator, the received physical item, and(ii) establish a credit balance based, at least in part, on a monetary value associated with the received and identified physical item,(b) display, via the at least one display device, a plurality of game symbols;

    (c) cause a selection of a plurality of said game symbols to form an initial symbol set;

    (d) prior to drawing any of the game symbols, select at least one symbol from said game symbols to form a subset symbol set if the number of initially selected symbols is greater than a predetermined number of symbols, wherein the symbols in the subset symbol set form a total symbol set;

    (e) after forming the total symbol set, draw, via the at least one processor, a plurality of symbols from said game symbols to form a first processor selected set;

    (f) if a predetermined number of symbols in the total symbol set correspond to symbols in the first processor selected set;

    (i) display, via the at least one display device, a designated award, and(ii) cause, via the at least one processor, an increase of the credit balance, said increase being based on the displayed designated award; and

    (g) if a cashout input is received via the cashout device, cause an initiation of any payout associated with the credit balance.
