Method and system for estimating battery capacity in a vehicle
First Claim
1. A method for estimating the capacity of a battery element in a vehicle, the method comprising the steps of:
- (a) determining if one or more threshold conditions have been met by detecting a battery temperature value and a battery state-of-charge (SOC) value using one or more vehicle battery sensors, and using a vehicle control module to compare the battery temperature value to a predetermined minimum temperature and the battery SOC value to a predetermined SOC range, and determining that the threshold conditions have been met when the battery temperature value exceeds the predetermined minimum temperature and the battery SOC value is within the predetermined SOC range;
(b) calculating the internal resistance of the battery element using the vehicle control module; and
(c) when the threshold conditions have been met, using the calculated internal resistance of the battery element to estimate the capacity of the battery element using the vehicle control module.

Abstract
A system and method is provided for estimating the capacity of a battery element in a vehicle, such as a hybrid electric vehicle. In one embodiment, the method determines if one or more threshold conditions have been met (e.g., conditions pertaining to battery temperature or battery state-of-charge (SOC)) and calculates the internal resistance of the battery element. When the threshold conditions have been met, the method uses the calculated internal resistance to estimate the capacity of the battery element. A corresponding battery system is also provided that includes a battery element, one or more battery sensors, and a control module configured to perform the method described above.
