1. A method comprising:

  • receiving data packets at a network interface of a device, the data packets received via a reduced-feature-set network stack operating over a subset of network drivers, the reduced-feature-set network stack and the subset of network drivers implemented by a first set of code executing on a subset of hardware resources of the network interface;

    responding, via the reduced-feature-set network stack, to the data packets to which the reduced-feature-set network stack is capable of responding;

    determining when the reduced-feature-set network stack is not capable of responding to one or more of the data packets received at the network interface of the device; and

    initiating execution of a second set of code on the hardware resources of the network interface to implement an increased-feature-set network stack operating over the network drivers to respond to the one or more data packets to which the reduced-feature-set network stack is not capable of responding.
