1. An active stethoscope chest piece, comprising:
- a chest piece housing containing;
a piezoelectric (piezo) element situated so as to pick up body sounds and provide an electrical representation of the body sounds to electrical connections;
a circuit board carrying electronic components and connected to the electrical connections which processes the electrical representation of the body sounds;
a universal serial bus (USB) interface receiving a digitized version of the electrical representation of the body sounds and configured to pass the digitized version of the processed electrical representation outside of the housing; and
where the circuit board includes a backstop protruding toward a central area of the piezo element, and where the back stop is situated so as to prevent the piezo element from flexing beyond a point that would damage the piezo element.

Abstract
A stethoscope chest piece has a chest piece housing containing a piezoelectric (piezo) element mounted within a housing. The piezo element converts body signals to an electrical representation that is processed by circuitry on a circuit board. A back stop is affixed to the circuit board to prevent excess excursion by the piezo element and may be one of the circuit elements on the circuit board. The circuitry includes a USB interface for passing the electrical representation to a receiving device such as a personal computer. This abstract is not to be considered limiting, since other embodiments may deviate from the features described in this abstract.
