1. A method of extruding a controlled amount of a non-Newtonian fluid from a source of the non-Newtonian fluid, through a chamber of an applicator to a nozzle of the applicator, and through the nozzle of the applicator onto a substrate moving relative to the nozzle, comprising:

  • applying a predetermined pressure to the non-Newtonian fluid at a known temperature;

    extruding the controlled amount of the non-Newtonian fluid, subject to the predetermined pressure, via an extrusion pathway through the chamber to the nozzle and through the nozzle onto the moving substrate; and

    redirecting a portion of the non-Newtonian fluid along a return pathway, independent of the extrusion pathway, from the chamber of the applicator to the source of the non-Newtonian fluid during extrusion of the controlled amount of non-Newtonian fluid in the extrusion step,wherein the predetermined pressure is based on empirical correlations of pressure applied to a calibration fluid, speed of a substrate relative to a nozzle during extrusion of the calibration fluid, and an amount of the calibration fluid extruded during an empirical data acquisition process performed independently of the extruding step.
