1. A method of operating an indicia reader adapted for hand held operation to read information bearing indicia (IBI) at a point of transaction (POT) comprising:
- configuring the indicia reader in a store to provide at least one IBI specific read notice for at least one IBI at the store, the at least one IBI specific read notice being based on the information encoded in the barcode;
reading an IBI at a POT with the indicia reader; and
,providing the at least one IBI specific read notice to a customer when the at least one IBI at the store is read;
wherein the at least one IBI specific read notice are at least one of the following;
distinctive beeper tones;
customized music;
a distinctive LED blink mode; and
a vibration with a special period.

at least one notification device for notifying a customer when the IBI is read;a memory for storing program instructions; at least one processor for executing the program instructions for; configuring the indicia reader in the store to provide at least one IBI specific read notice for at least one IBI at the store, the at least one IBI specific read notice being based on information encoded in the barcode; reading an IBI at a POT with the indicia reader; and
