1. An end effector for use with a surgical stapler, the end effector comprising:

  • a staple cartridge including a tissue contacting surface having at least one recessed groove defined therein and extending across the tissue contacting surface from a first outer side edge to a second outer side edge of the staple cartridge, the first and second outer side edges of the staple cartridge being planar along an entire length of the tissue contacting surface;

    an anvil plate including a tissue contacting surface having at least one recessed groove defined therein and extending from a first outer side edge to a second outer side edge of the anvil plate;

    a surgical buttress releasably disposed on the tissue contacting surfaces of each of the staple cartridge and the anvil plate; and

    at least one suture disposed within the at least one recessed groove of each of the staple cartridge and the anvil plate and configured to retain the respective surgical buttress atop the respective tissue contacting surface.
