Abstract

A computer-implemented navigational method includes transmitting, from a mobile computing device to a computer server system, data that can be used to determine a start point and an end point of a trip. The method also includes receiving navigational information defining a route between the start point and the end point, and a plurality of digital photographic images that have previously been taken along the route, sensing motion of the mobile computing device along the route, and displaying updated images from the plurality of images that substantially match a geographic position of the mobile computing device along the route.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method, comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, navigational information that defines a route;

sensing motion of the computing device along the route;

displaying, based on the sensed motion of the computing device along the route, overhead map or satellite images that correspond to respective locations of the computing device along the route;

identifying a current traveling speed of the computing device along the route;

determining that the current traveling speed of the computing device is less than a threshold traveling speed; and

in response to determining that the current traveling speed of the computing device is less than the threshold traveling speed, causing the computing device to change from (a) displaying the overhead map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to (b) displaying one or more digital photographic images that were captured at street level and that correspond to one or more locations of the computing device along the route.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein displaying the one or more digital photographic images comprises displaying multiple different digital photographic images in coordination with the sensed motion of the computing device along the route such that particular ones of the multiple different digital photographic images are displayed responsive to the computing device being located at geographic locations that correspond to respective locations at which the particular ones of the multiple different digital photographic images were captured at street level.

The computer-implemented method of claim 2, wherein displaying the multiple different digital photographic images in coordination with the sensed motion of the computing device along the route comprises smoothly transitioning from image to image in the multiple different digital photographic images using a blurring technique that simulates forward motion from image to image.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising changing a zoom level of the overhead map or satellite images based on the current traveling speed of the computing device.

The computer-implemented method of claim 4, wherein the computing device is arranged to increase the zoom level of the displayed overhead map or satellite images as the current traveling speed of the computing device decreases, and to decrease the zoom level of the displayed overhead map or satellite images as the current traveling speed of the computing device increases.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, wherein sensing motion of the computing device along the route comprises periodically sensing a current geographic location of the computing device as the computing device travels along the route.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1, further comprising:

identifying a particular geographic location that is located along the route;

determining that the computing device is located within a first distance of the particular geographic location; and

in response to determining that the computing device is located within the first distance of the particular geographic location, causing the computing device to change from (a) displaying second overhead map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to (b) displaying one or more second digital photographic images that were captured at street level and that correspond to one or more locations of the computing device within the first distance of the particular geographic location.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 7, wherein:

the particular geographic location is a point of interest along the route, and

causing the computing device to change from displaying the second map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to displaying the one or more second digital photographic images comprises displaying a street-level image of the point of interest.

The computer-implemented method of claim 7, further comprising causing the computing device to display, in response to determining that the computing device is located within the first distance of the particular geographic location, a street-level representation of the route at a different viewing angle than a viewing angle of an overhead representation of the route that the computing device presented before the computing device was determined to be located within the first distance of the particular geographic location.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 7, wherein:

the particular geographic location is an endpoint of the route, and

causing the computing device to change from displaying the map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to displaying the one or more digital photographic images comprises displaying a street-level image of the endpoint of the route.

11. One or more computer-readable devices having instructions stored thereon that, when executed by one or more processors, cause performance of operations comprising:

receiving, by a computing device, navigational information that defines a route;

sensing motion of the computing device along the route;

displaying, based on the sensed motion of the computing device along the route, overhead map or satellite images that correspond to respective locations of the computing device along the route;

identifying a current traveling speed of the computing device along the route;

determining that the current traveling speed of the computing device is less than a threshold traveling speed; and

in response to determining that the current traveling speed of the computing device is less than the threshold traveling speed, causing the computing device to change from (a) displaying the overhead map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to (b) displaying one or more digital photographic images that were captured at street level and that correspond to one or more locations of the computing device along the route.

The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 11, wherein displaying the one or more digital photographic images comprises displaying multiple different digital photographic images in coordination with the sensed motion of the computing device along the route such that particular ones of the multiple different digital photographic images are displayed responsive to the computing device being located at geographic locations that correspond to respective locations at which the particular ones of the multiple different digital photographic images were captured at street level.

The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 12, wherein displaying the multiple different digital photographic images in coordination with the sensed motion of the computing device along the route comprises smoothly transitioning from image to image in the multiple different digital photographic images using a blurring technique that simulates forward motion from image to image.

14. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise changing a zoom level of the overhead map or satellite images based on the current traveling speed of the computing device.

15. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 14, wherein the computing device is arranged to increase the zoom level of the displayed overhead map or satellite images as the current traveling speed of the computing device decreases, and to decrease the zoom level of the displayed overhead map or satellite images as the current traveling speed of the computing device increases.

16. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 11, wherein sensing motion of the computing device along the route comprises periodically sensing a current geographic location of the computing device as the computing device travels along the route.

17. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 11, wherein the operations further comprise:

identifying a particular geographic location that is located along the route;

determining that the computing device is located within a first distance of the particular geographic location; and

in response to determining that the computing device is located within the first distance of the particular geographic location, causing the computing device to change from (a) displaying second overhead map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to (b) displaying one or more second digital photographic images that were captured at street level and that correspond to one or more locations of the computing device within the first distance of the particular geographic location.

18. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 17, wherein:

the particular geographic location is an endpoint of the route, and

causing the computing device to change from displaying the second map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to displaying the one or more second digital photographic images comprises displaying a street-level image of the endpoint of the route.

19. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 17, wherein:

the particular geographic location is a point of interest along the route, and

causing the computing device to change from displaying the second map or satellite images that correspond to the respective locations of the computing device along the route to displaying the one or more second digital photographic images comprises displaying a street-level image of the point of interest.

20. The one or more computer-readable devices of claim 17, wherein the operations further comprise causing the computing device to display, in response to determining that the computing device is located within the first distance of the particular geographic location, a street-level representation of the route at a different viewing angle than a viewing angle of an overhead representation of the route that the computing device presented before the computing device was determined to be located within the first distance of the particular geographic location.
