Abstract

The various aspects of the invention pertain to devices and related methods for treating heart conditions, including, for example, dilatation, valve incompetencies, including mitral valve leakage, and other similar heart failure conditions. The devices and related methods of the present invention operate to assist in the apposition of heart valve leaflets to improve valve function. According to one aspect of the invention, a method improves the function of a valve of a heart by placing an elongate member transverse a heart chamber so that each end of the elongate member extends through a wall of the heart, and placing first and second anchoring members external the chamber. The first and second anchoring members are attached to first and second ends of the elongate member to fix the elongate member in a position across the chamber so as to reposition papillary muscles within the chamber. Also described herein is a method for placing a splint assembly transverse a heart chamber by advancing an elongate member through vasculature structure and into the heart chamber.

Claims

1. A method for improving a function of a patient'"'"'s heart, comprising:

securing a heart treatment device to a portion of the patient'"'"'s heart, wherein the heart treatment device comprises at least one member secured relative to a valve of the heart, wherein the heart treatment device is configured to assist in improving apposition of leaflets of the valve;

monitoring the function of the patient'"'"'s heart; and

adjusting a configuration of the heart treatment device based on data obtained from monitoring the function of the patient'"'"'s heart.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein a portion of the heart treatment device is disposed outside of the patient'"'"'s heart.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein a portion of the heart treatment device is disposed within a structure of the patient'"'"'s heart.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the heart treatment device is a passive device.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the heart treatment device does not require a stimulus to function.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the valve is an atrioventricular valve.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the atrioventricular valve is a mitral valve.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising delivering the heart treatment device to the patient'"'"'s heart.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein delivering the heart treatment device includes endovascularly delivering the heart treatment device.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein monitoring the function of the patient'"'"'s heart includes real-time monitoring of the function.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein real-time monitoring includes ultrasound imaging.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the heart treatment device is configured to alter a positioning of a heart structure, throughout a cardiac cycle.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein securing the device to a portion of the patient'"'"'s heart alters the positioning of the heart structure.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the heart structure is an annulus of a heart valve.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the heart structure is a heart wall.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the heart wall is an external heart wall.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein securing the device to a portion of the patient'"'"'s heart includes placing the device in contact with structure other than structure of a heart valve.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein adjusting a configuration of the heart treatment device alters a positioning of a heart structure, throughout a cardiac cycle.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the heart structure is a heart wall.

20. The method of claim 18, wherein the heart structure is an annulus of a heart valve.

21. A method for treating a valve of a patient'"'"'s heart, comprising:

implanting a device relative to the patient'"'"'s heart, such that a portion of the device is disposed externally of the patient'"'"'s heart, wherein the heart treatment device comprises at least one member secured relative to a valve of the heart, wherein the heart treatment device is configured to assist in improving apposition of leaflets of the valve;

monitoring in real-time a function of the valve;

evaluating monitoring data; and

adjusting the device relative to the patient'"'"'s heart based on the monitoring data so as to alter the function of the valve, throughout a cardiac cycle.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the valve is a mitral valve.

23. The method of claim 21, wherein adjusting the device relative to the patient'"'"'s heart includes deforming a wall of the patient'"'"'s heart.
