1. A method of profile-based passive network switching, comprising:

  • receiving with a presence-enabled wireless access point a presence beacon that is transmitted from a mobile device over a local wireless network channel without requiring authentication of the mobile device to access the local wireless network;

    determining the contents of the beacon, and, based on the determined contents;

    extracting a device-specific identifier from the beacon;

    determining whether the beacon comprises an emergency frame, and if so;

    preparing local wireless network authentication and connection information to facilitate connecting the mobile device to the local wireless network; and

    transmitting the local wireless network authentication and connection information to the mobile device without transmitting the device-specific identifier or provider information of the access point to a networked server; and

    if the beacon is determined to not comprise an emergency frame;

    transmitting the device-specific identifier and provider information of the access point to a networked server configured with presence network switching software for determining network switching requirements for enabling the mobile device to use the local wireless network based on the transmitted device-specific identifier and provider information;

    receiving mobile device network switching data from the server that references device access privileges for network switching that are based on at least one of the transmitted device-specific identifier and the access point provider information;

    preparing local wireless network authentication and connection information that is in compliance with the device access privileges for network switching to facilitate connecting the mobile device to the local wireless network; and

    transmitting the local wireless network authentication and connection information to the mobile device over a network other than the local wireless network;

    wherein a service identifier of the local wireless network is unknown to the mobile device prior to transmitting the local wireless network authentication and connection information.
