Abstract

Provided herein is an instrument and method useful to incise in to the skin to a precise depth and at a specific angle with respect to the surface of the skin of a patient, for the extraction of individual follicular groups or individual follicular units. An instrument according to the invention precisely limits the depth of incision, and creates a circular incision around a hair, follicular unit, or follicular cluster in a manner such that no damage occurs to any of the hair shafts.

Claims

1. An apparatus comprising:

a main body having a first body end and a second body end, the first body end being disposed opposite to the second body end of the main body along an axis;

a punch to be disposed approximately at the first body end and to be capable of being inserted into skin tissue to extract one or more hair follicles, at least a portion of the punch to extend beyond the first body end away from the main body, the punch having a punch body, a first punch end, and a second punch end, the first and second punch ends disposed on opposing ends of the punch body, the first punch end having a terminating end;

a surface to be fixedly coupled to the punch so as to abut the skin tissue and limit insertion of the punch into the skin tissue to a predetermined depth during an extraction operation; and

an actuator having an actuator body extending along the axis, the actuator body having a distal end face extending in a direction transverse to the axis and to directly abut the terminating end of the first punch end of the punch to displace the second punch end of the punch along the axis wherein, in response to adjustment of the actuator, a distance by which the second punch end is to extend beyond the first body end to be set approximately to the predetermined depth.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 1 mm to about 7 mm.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 0.2 mm.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 0.05 mm to about 0.5 mm.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 3.8 mm.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the actuator is to be located approximately at the second body end.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the actuator comprises a threaded screw.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the main body has approximately a cylindrical shape.

9. An apparatus comprising:

a main body having a first body end and a second body end, the first body end being disposed opposite to the second body end of the main body along an axis;

a punch to be disposed approximately at the first body end and to be capable of being inserted into skin tissue to extract one or more hair follicles, at least a portion of the punch to extend beyond the first body end away from the main body, the punch having a punch body, a first punch end, and a second punch end, the first and second punch ends disposed on opposing ends of the punch body, the first punch end having a terminating end;

a depth stop to be coupled to the punch so as to abut the skin tissue and limit insertion of the punch into the skin tissue to a predetermined depth during an extraction operation; and

an actuator having an actuator body extending along the axis, the actuator body having a distal end face extending in a direction transverse to the axis and to directly abut the terminating end of the first punch end of the punch to displace the second punch end of the punch along the axis wherein, in response to adjustment of the actuator, a distance by which the second punch end is to extend beyond the first body end to be set approximately to the predetermined depth.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 1 mm to about 7 mm.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 0.2 mm.

12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 0.05 mm to about 0.5 mm.

13. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the predetermined depth is to be about 3.8 mm.

14. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein at least a portion of the actuator is to be located approximately at the second body end.

15. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the actuator comprises a threaded screw.

16. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the main body has approximately a cylindrical shape.

17. An apparatus comprising:

main body means having a first body end and a second body end, the first body end being disposed opposite to the second body end of the main body means approximately along an axis;

punch means to be disposed approximately at the first body end and to be capable of being inserted into skin tissue to extract one or more hair follicles, at least a portion of the punch means to extend beyond the first body end away from the main body means, the punch means to have a punch body, a first punch end, and a second punch end, the first and second punch ends to be disposed on opposing ends of the punch body, the first punch end to have a terminating end;

surface means to be fixedly coupled to the punch means so as to abut the skin tissue and limit insertion of the punch means into the skin tissue to a predetermined depth during an extraction operation; and

adjustment means having an adjustment means body extending along the axis, the adjustment means body having a distal end face extending in a direction transverse to the axis and to directly abut the terminating end of the first punch end of the punch means to displace the second punch end of the punch means along the axis wherein, in response to adjustment of the adjustment means, a distance by which the second punch end is to extend beyond the first body end is to be set approximately to the predetermined depth.

18. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein at least a portion of the adjustment means is located approximately at the second body end.

19. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the adjustment means comprises a threaded screw.

20. The apparatus of claim 17, wherein the main body means has approximately a cylindrical shape.

21. An apparatus comprising:

main body means having a first body end and a second body end, the first body end being disposed opposite to the second body end of the main body means along an axis;

punch means to be disposed approximately at the first body end and to be capable of being inserted into skin tissue to extract one or more hair follicles, at least a portion of the punch means to extend beyond the first body end away from the main body means, the punch means to have a punch body, a first punch end, and a second punch end, the first and second punch ends to be disposed on opposing ends of the punch body, the first punch end to have a terminating end;

depth stop means to be coupled to the punch means so as to abut the skin tissue and limit insertion of the punch means into the skin tissue to a predetermined depth during an extraction operation; and

adjustment means having an adjustment means body extending along the axis, the adjustment means body having a distal end face extending in a direction transverse to the axis and to directly abut the terminating end of the first punch end of the punch means to displace the second punch end of the punch means along the axis wherein, in response to adjustment of the adjustment means, a distance by which the second punch end is to extend beyond the first body end is to be set approximately to the predetermined depth.

22. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein at least a portion of the adjustment means is located approximately at the second body end.

23. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the adjustment means comprises a threaded screw.

24. The apparatus of claim 21, wherein the main body means has approximately a cylindrical shape.
