Abstract

A quick connect assembly is provided for a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). The assembly includes an inlet housing configured to be coupled in fluid communication between a pressure vessel and a pressure reducer. The inlet housing has a probe receptacle configured to receive a probe on a pressure vessel. A latch assembly is provided with the inlet housing. The latch assembly moves between latched and unlatched positions to latch and unlatch, respectively, the probe in the probe receptacle. A latch lock assembly is provided with the inlet housing. The latch lock assembly moves between locked and unlocked positions to lock and unlock, respectively, the latch assembly.

Claims

1. A quick connect assembly for a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), comprising:

an inlet housing configured to be coupled in fluid communication between a pressure vessel and a pressure reducer, the inlet housing having a probe receptacle configured to receive a probe on the pressure vessel;

a latch assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch assembly configured to move along a movement path between latched and unlatched positions to latch and unlatch, respectively, the probe in the probe receptacle; and

a latch lock assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch lock assembly moving between locked and unlocked positions to lock and unlock, respectively, the latch assembly, the latch lock assembly including a lock pin in the inlet housing that is movable relative to the inlet housing and the latch assembly, wherein the lock pin extends into the movement path of the latch assembly to engage the latch assembly when in the locked position, and the lock pin being retracted out of the movement path of the latch assembly to not engage the latch assembly when in the unlocked position.

2. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch lock assembly prevents the latch assembly from moving out of the latched position when the latch lock assembly is in the locked position.

3. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch lock assembly is configured to be moved from the unlocked position to the locked position and to be held in the locked position when gas pressure in the inlet housing exceeds a threshold.

4. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch lock assembly prevents the latch assembly from releasing the probe of the pressure vessel when under pressure and in the locked position.

The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch lock assembly further comprises a compression spring, the compression spring biasing the latch lock assembly toward the unlocked position such that the lock pin is biased toward a retracted position that is out of the movement path of the latch assembly.

The assembly of claim 1, wherein the inlet housing has a supply conduit therethrough that is configured to receive gas pressure from the probe on the pressure vessel, the lock pin of the latch lock assembly having a distal end in fluid communication with the supply conduit such that the distal end of the lock pin is configured to experience the gas pressure that is in the supply conduit, the latch lock assembly moving between the unlocked and locked positions based on the gas pressure experienced by the distal end of the lock pin.

7. The assembly of claim 1, further comprising an inlet nozzle located within the probe receptacle, the inlet nozzle configured to align with a tip of the probe.

8. The assembly of claim 1, further comprising a spring-loaded nipple disk located within the probe receptacle, the nipple disk configured to align with a tip of the probe.

The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch assembly includes a plurality of latch elements distributed about the probe receptacle and adapted to fit within a circumferential notch in the probe on the pressure vessel, the latch elements securing the probe in the probe receptacle when the latch assembly is in the latched position.

The assembly of claim 1, wherein the probe receptacle is surrounded by an interior wall having openings therethrough, the latch assembly including a plurality of latch elements that partially enter the probe receptacle through the openings to engage and retain the probe in the probe receptacle when the latch assembly is in the latched position.

The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch assembly includes a plurality of latch elements distributed about the probe receptacle and at least one spring that biases the latch elements radially inward into the probe receptacle and toward the probe of the pressure vessel, the at least one spring maintaining the plurality of latch elements secured to the probe when the latch assembly is in the latched position.

12. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch lock assembly is biased to the unlocked position.

13. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the lock pin of the latch lock assembly prevents the latch assembly from moving from the latched position to the unlatched position when the latch lock assembly is in the locked position.

14. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch lock assembly prevents the probe from being pulled out of the probe receptacle when the latch lock assembly is in the locked position.

15. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the latch assembly comprises an opening, the lock pin of the latch lock assembly extending into the opening of the latch assembly when the latch lock assembly is in the locked position and the latch assembly is in the latched position, the lock pin preventing movement of the latch assembly from the latched position to the unlatched position when the lock pin is received within the opening of the latch assembly.

16. The assembly of claim 1, further comprising at least one of the pressure vessel or the pressure reducer.

17. A quick connect assembly for a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), comprising:

an inlet housing configured to be coupled in fluid communication between a pressure vessel and a pressure reducer, the inlet housing having a probe receptacle configured to receive a probe on the pressure vessel, wherein the inlet housing has a supply conduit therethrough that is configured to convey gas pressure from the pressure vessel to the pressure reducer;

a latch assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch assembly moving between latched and unlatched positions to latch and unlatch, respectively, the probe in the probe receptacle; and

a latch lock assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch lock assembly moving between locked and unlocked positions to lock and unlock, respectively, the latch assembly, the latch lock assembly moving from the unlocked position to the locked position when the gas pressure in the supply conduit exceeds a threshold.

18. A quick connect assembly for a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), comprising:

an inlet housing configured to be coupled in fluid communication between a pressure vessel and a pressure reducer, the inlet housing having a probe receptacle configured to receive a probe on the pressure vessel;

a latch assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch assembly moving between latched and unlatched positions to latch and unlatch, respectively, the probe in the probe receptacle, the latch assembly including a plurality of latch elements distributed about the probe receptacle and adapted to engage the probe and secure the probe in the probe receptacle when the latch assembly is in the latched position; and

a lock pin provided with the inlet housing, the lock pin moving between locked and unlocked positions to lock and unlock, respectively, the latch assembly, the lock pin preventing the latch assembly from moving from the latched position to the unlatched position when the lock pin is in the locked position.

The assembly of claim 18, wherein the probe receptacle is surrounded by an interior wall having openings therethrough, the plurality of latch elements partially entering the probe receptacle through the openings to engage and retain the probe in the probe receptacle when the latch assembly is in the latched position.

The assembly of claim 18, wherein the latch assembly includes at least one spring that biases the plurality of latch elements radially inward into the probe receptacle and toward the probe of the pressure vessel, the at least one spring maintaining the plurality of latch elements secured to the probe when the latch assembly is in the latched position.

21. The assembly of claim 18, further comprising an inlet nozzle located within the probe receptacle, the inlet nozzle configured to align with a tip of the probe.

22. The assembly of claim 18, further comprising a spring-loaded nipple disk located within the probe receptacle, the nipple disk configured to align with a tip of the probe.

23. The assembly of claim 18, further comprising a latch lock assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch lock assembly comprising the lock pin.

24. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the lock pin prevents the latch assembly from releasing the probe of a pressure vessel when in the locked position.

25. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the lock pin is slidably mounted in the inlet housing, the locked position of the lock pin being an extended position that is within a movement path of the latch assembly such that the lock pin engages the latch assembly.

26. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the lock pin is slidably mounted in the inlet housing, the assembly further comprising a compression spring, the compression spring biasing the lock pin toward a retracted position that is out of a movement path of the latch assembly, the retracted position corresponding to the unlocked position of the lock pin.

27. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the inlet housing has a supply conduit therethrough to convey gas pressure from the pressure vessel to the pressure reducer, the lock pin moving between the unlocked and locked positions based on the gas pressure in the supply conduit.

28. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the lock pin is configured to be moved from the unlocked position to the locked position and to be held in the locked position when gas pressure in the inlet housing exceeds a threshold.

29. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the lock pin prevents the probe from being pulled out of the probe receptacle when the lock pin is in the locked position.

30. The assembly of claim 18, wherein the latch assembly comprises an opening, the lock pin being received within the opening when the lock pin is the locked position, the lock pin preventing movement of the latch assembly from the latched position to the unlatched position when the lock pin is received within the opening of the latch assembly.

31. The assembly of claim 18, further comprising at least one of the pressure vessel or the pressure reducer.

32. A quick connect assembly for a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), comprising:

an inlet housing configured to be coupled in fluid communication between a pressure vessel and a pressure reducer, the inlet housing having a probe receptacle configured to receive a probe on the pressure vessel;

a latch assembly provided with the inlet housing, the latch assembly moving between latched and unlatched positions to latch and unlatch, respectively, the probe in the probe receptacle, the latch assembly including a plurality of latch elements distributed about the probe receptacle and adapted to engage the probe and secure the probe in the probe receptacle when the latch assembly is in the latched position; and

a lock pin provided with the inlet housing, the lock pin moving between locked and unlocked positions to lock and unlock, respectively, the latch assembly, the lock pin preventing the latch assembly from moving from the latched position to the unlatched position when the lock pin is in the locked position, wherein the lock pin has a distal end in fluid communication with the probe such that gas pressure at the probe of the pressure vessel is experienced by the distal end of the lock pin, the lock pin moving from the unlocked position to the locked position when the gas pressure at the distal end exceeds a threshold.
