1. A system for associating anatomical information with image data, the system comprising:
- a computer processor configured to;
obtain, via user input, an identification of a location of an anatomical landmark within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data, wherein the image data includes a first image that is of a first two-dimensional slice of the three-dimensional space and a second image that is of a second two-dimensional slice of the three-dimensional space, the second two-dimensional slice being orthogonal to the first two-dimensional slice;
record the identified location in association with the image data; and
display a first graphical representation of the anatomical landmark overlying a display area in which the first image is displayed and a second graphical representation of the anatomical landmark overlying a display area in which the second image is displayed;
wherein the user input includes one of;
an instruction for rotating the first image relative to the first graphical representation of the anatomical landmark and an instruction for rotating the second image relative to the second graphical representation of the anatomical landmark; and
an instruction for rotating the first graphical representation of the anatomical landmark relative to the first image and an instruction for rotating the second graphical representation of the anatomical landmark relative to the second image.

Abstract
A system and method for associating anatomically significant regions with regions of one or more images may include automatically modifying images of different modalities according to different correction algorithms, providing a user interface for identifying a plane within three-dimensional data, scaling atlas structures to fit an anatomical image according to identified landmarks, registering an atlas to such an image via a combination of registration algorithms, and/or registering an atlas to such an image using a feature extraction algorithm.

1. A system for associating anatomical information with image data, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to; obtain, via user input, an identification of a location of an anatomical landmark within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data, wherein the image data includes a first image that is of a first two-dimensional slice of the three-dimensional space and a second image that is of a second two-dimensional slice of the three-dimensional space, the second two-dimensional slice being orthogonal to the first two-dimensional slice; record the identified location in association with the image data; and display a first graphical representation of the anatomical landmark overlying a display area in which the first image is displayed and a second graphical representation of the anatomical landmark overlying a display area in which the second image is displayed; wherein the user input includes one of; an instruction for rotating the first image relative to the first graphical representation of the anatomical landmark and an instruction for rotating the second image relative to the second graphical representation of the anatomical landmark; and an instruction for rotating the first graphical representation of the anatomical landmark relative to the first image and an instruction for rotating the second graphical representation of the anatomical landmark relative to the second image. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3)

4. A system for associating anatomical information with image data, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to; obtain user input of a location of an anatomical landmark within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data, wherein the anatomical landmark is a predefined plane, and the user input includes selection of three points within the three-dimensional space, at least two of the three points being selected in different displayed imagoes; and in response to the selection of the three points, update a display area in which an image in which none of the three points is selected is displayed to display a different image that corresponds to the plane. - View Dependent Claims (5)

6. A system for associating anatomical information with image data, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to; obtain locations of at least two anatomical landmarks within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data; register an anatomical structure atlas to an anatomical region represented in the image data based on the obtained locations of the at least two anatomical landmarks; wherein; the registration includes; aligning the anatomical structure atlas with the image data; and in accordance with the obtained location, scaling the anatomical structure atlas; the scaling includes modifying the anatomical atlas structure such that at least two anatomical landmarks of the anatomical atlas structure, that correspond to the at least two anatomical landmarks whose locations were obtained, are offset from a predefined anatomical structure of the anatomical structure atlas relative to other structures of the anatomical structure atlas equal to an offset of the obtained locations of the at least two anatomical landmarks to a location defined in the image data as corresponding to the predefined structure, relative to remaining portions of the anatomical region represented in the image data. - View Dependent Claims (7, 8)

9. A system for associating anatomical information with image data, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to; obtain an identification of locations of an anterior commissure (AC) point and a posterior commissure (PC) point within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data; select a point between the AC point and the PC point as a mid-commissural point (MCP) defined in an anatomical region represented in the image data; and register an anatomical structure atlas to the anatomical region represented in the image data, wherein the registration includes; aligning the anatomical structure atlas with the image data based on the selection; and based on a distance between the MCP defined in the anatomical region and the identified AC point and PC point, scaling the anatomical structure atlas. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11)

12. A system for associating anatomical information with image data of a patient, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to; obtain a location of an anatomical landmark within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data; and generate a patient-specific anatomical atlas, wherein the generation includes at least one of; (A) registering an anatomical atlas to the patient image data with a combination of a rigid registration, an affine registration, and a B-spline registration; and (B) performing the following; registering each of a plurality of anatomical atlases to the patient image data; determining similarities between image data corresponding to the plurality of anatomical atlases and the patient image data; and in accordance with the determined similarities, combining at least two of the registered anatomical atlases. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23)

24. A system for associating anatomical information with image data that represents an anatomical region, the system comprising:

a computer processor configured to; obtain a location of at least two anatomical landmarks within a three-dimensional space formed by the image data; align an anatomical structure atlas with the image data; and in accordance with the obtained location, scale the anatomical structure atlas; wherein one of; the scaling of the anatomical structure atlas is non-linear, such that the further a region of the anatomical structure atlas is from a defined mid-commissural point (MCP), the less the region is modified by the scaling; the anatomical structure atlas is anisotropically scaled, the anatomical structure atlas is of a brain, and the scaling includes modifying the anatomical structure atlas in each of left and right directions and a superior and inferior directions by approximately 0.8 an amount by which the anatomical structure atlas is modified in anterior and posterior directions; and the anatomical structure atlas is anisotropically scaled, the anatomical structure atlas is of the brain, and the scaling includes modifying the anatomical structure atlas in each of the left and right directions and the superior and inferior directions by 0.8 the amount by which the anatomical structure atlas is modified in the anterior and posterior directions, plus 0.2. - View Dependent Claims (25, 26, 27)
