1. A computer implemented method of determining measurements for designing a part, said method comprising:

  • obtaining a digital image on a computer, said digital image containing at least a primary object constraint dimension to which said part is to conform and a standard reference object having one or more readily identified known linear dimensions viewable in said digital image;

    detecting, on a computer, said reference object in said digital image utilizing at least one of color, edge and shape detection;

    determining, on a computer, pixel dimensions of said standard reference object based on said one or more known reference object dimensions and calculating a calibration factor therefrom using said one or more known linear dimensions;

    receiving at least one of a reference object feature identification and a primary object feature identification from an end user after capture of said digital image for aiding in detection of a reference object and/or primary object dimension end points;

    calculating, on a computer, a planar constraint dimension from said digital image in accordance with said calibration factor; and

    wherein said digital image is obtained substantially within a projection of said primary object.
