Abstract

Various embodiments of wireless communication systems and methods in which the system seamlessly dual-uses a receiver chain for incoming transmissions and for other signal sensing purposes. The system is configured such that there are multiple receiver chains, and at least one receiver chain alternates between receiving a communication signal with information payload and receiving other signals solely for the purposes of monitoring and/or improving some aspects of the system. In various embodiments, the alternating receiver chain receives alternatively signals with information payloads and signals which have passes through a power amplifier with amplifier distortion characteristics. In various embodiments, the alternating receiver chain receives alternatively signals with information payloads and signals which may be associated with background noise, or other radio transmissions.

Claims

1. A wireless communication system operative to seamlessly dual-use a receiver chain for receiving incoming transmissions and for other signal sensing purposes, comprising:

a receiver; and

a first and a second receiver chains associated respectively with a first antenna and a second antenna;

wherein said receiver is operative to process a first signal received via said first receiver chain and said first antenna, together with a second signal received via said second receiver chain and said second antenna, and thereby to enhance reception of at least one incoming wireless transmission associated with said first and second signals;

said wireless communication system is operative to utilize said second receiver chain, during at least one period of said incoming wireless transmission, for reception of a third signal not associated with said incoming wireless transmission, and to thereby make dual-use of said second receiver chain, and consequently make said second signal unavailable in said receiver for said enhancement during said at least one period; and

said wireless communication system is further operative, during said at least one period, to substitute to said receiver said second signal with a duplication of said first signal, in compensation for said unavailability of said second signal in said receiver, and without any knowledge of said receiver regarding said utilization requiring said substitution.

2. The system of claim 1, further comprising a receiver interface operative to perform said duplications and compensation.

The system of claim 2, wherein said receiver interface is digital and comprising an analog-to-digital converter operative to convert said first signal into a digital form, and wherein said receiver is digital as well, thereby enabling said duplications and compensation to be made at the digital level.

4. The system of claim 3, wherein said receiver and receiver interface are implemented in a digital-signal-processor.

5. The system of claim 2, further comprising:

a first power amplifier having first signal distortion characteristics;

a radio-frequency attenuator; and

a radio-frequency switching fabric;

wherein said wireless communication system is further operative to transmit a first transmission via said first power amplifier, resulting in said first transmission having a distortion associated with said first signal distortion characteristics;

make use of said radio-frequency switching fabric and said radio-frequency attenuator to bypass said second antenna prior to said utilization, and to inject, during said at least one period of said incoming wireless transmission, an attenuated version of said first transmission having said distortion, into said second receiver chain, wherein said attenuated version becomes the third signal; and

determine said first signal distortion characteristics of said first power amplifier, via analysis of said distortion present in said third signal received via said second receiver chain.

6. A method for seamlessly dual-using a receiver chain for receiving incoming transmissions and for other signal sensing purposes, comprising:

enhancing, in a receiver of a wireless communication system, reception of at least one incoming wireless transmission, by processing a first signal associated with said incoming wireless transmission received via a first receiver chain and a first antenna, and by processing a second signal associated with said incoming wireless transmission received via a second receiver chain and a second antenna;

utilizing, by said wireless communication system, said second receiver chain, during at least one period of said reception, for receiving a third signal not associated with said incoming wireless transmission, thereby dual-using said second receiver chain, and consequently making said second signal unavailable in said receiver for said enhancing during said at least one period; and

compensating, by said wireless communication system, during said at least one period, for said unavailability of said second signal in said receiver, by substituting to said receiver said second signal with a duplication of said first signal, thereby making said receiver unaware of said utilization requiring said substitution.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising:

transmitting, by said wireless communication system, a first transmission via a first power amplifier having a first signal distortion characteristics, resulting in said first transmission having a distortion associated with said first signal distortion characteristics;

injecting, by said wireless communication system, during said at least one period of said reception, an attenuated version of said first transmission having said distortion, into said second receiver chain, wherein said attenuated version is the third signal, thereby bypassing said second antenna and facilitating said utilization; and

determining, by said wireless communication system, said first signal distortion characteristics of said first power amplifier, by analyzing said distortion present in said third signal received via said second receiver chain.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein said enhancement is adversely affected during said at least one period, as a result of said duplication, therefore further comprising:

keeping said at least one period to a necessary minimum.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein said necessary minimum is at least 100 microseconds, but not longer than 10 milliseconds, thereby allowing sufficient time for said analysis of said distortion present in said third signal received via said second receiver chain during said at least one period.

The method of claim 7, further comprising operating said wireless communication system in a frequency-division-duplex mode, such that at least most of said transmitting of said first transmission occurs simultaneously with said reception of at least one incoming wireless transmission, and such that said transmitting is done at a first frequency, and said reception is done at a second frequency.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising:

configuring, by said wireless communication system, said second receiver chain to operate in said second frequency during said enhancing; and

configuring, by said wireless communication system, said second receiver chain to operate in said first frequency during said utilizing.

12. The method of claim 6, wherein said incoming wireless transmission belongs to a first frequency band, and further comprising:

receiving, by said wireless communication system, during said at least one period of said reception, via said second receiver chain, said third signal associated with a second wireless transmission belonging to a second frequency band, thereby facilitating monitoring of said second frequency band.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein said enhancement is adversely affected during said at least one period, as a result of said duplication, therefore further comprising:

keeping said at least one period to a necessary minimum.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein said necessary minimum is at least one millisecond, but not longer than 10 milliseconds, thereby allowing sufficient time for said monitoring of said second frequency band during said at least one period.

15. The method of claim 6, wherein said enhancement is associated with maximal ratio-combining, and further comprising:

combining, by said receiver, said first and second signals using maximal-ratio-combining techniques, thereby enhancing a signal-to-noise ratio associated with said incoming wireless transmission.

16. The method of claim 6, wherein said enhancement is associated with spatial multiplexing, and further comprising:

decoding, by said receiver, at least two transmission streams from said first and second signals using spatial-multiplexing reception techniques, thereby enhancing reception rates associated with said incoming wireless transmission.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said first and second receiver chains are part of a multiple-input-multiple-output communication configuration.

18. The method of claim 6, wherein said at least one period associated with said utilization is essentially periodic and is kept short relative to periods associated with said enhancement.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein said at least one period associated with said utilization is shorter than said periods associated with said enhancement by a factor of between 100,000 and 10,000,000.
