Abstract

An improved broadside coupled, open pin field connector. The connector incorporates lossy material to selectively dampen resonance within pairs of conductive members connected to ground when the connector is mounted to a printed circuit board. The material may also decrease crosstalk and mode conversion. The lossy material is selectively positioned to substantially dampen resonances along pairs that may be connected to ground without unacceptably attenuating signals carried by other pairs. The lossy material may be selectively positioned near mating contact portions of the conductive members. Multiple techniques are described for selectively positioning the lossy material, including molding, inserting lossy members into a housing or coating surfaces of the connector housing. The lossy material alternatively may be positioned between broad sides of conductive members of a pair. By using material of relatively low loss, loss when the conductive members are used to carry signals is relatively low, but an appreciable attenuation of resonances is provided on pairs connected to ground. As a result, an overall improvement of signal to noise ratio is achieved.

Claims

1. An electrical connector, comprising:

an insulative housing;

a plurality of conductive members disposed in a plurality of parallel columns of conductive members affixed to the insulative housing, each of the plurality of conductive members comprising a mating interface portion;

a plurality of lossy members, each lossy member being positioned adjacent the mating interface portions of conductive members in a column of the plurality of columns.

2. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein:

each of the plurality of conductive members further comprises a contact tail and an intermediate portion electrically coupling the contact tail and the mating interface portion,

the plurality of conductive members comprises first, second, third, and fourth conductive members disposed in a column;

the first and second conductive members form a first differential pair;

the third and fourth conductive members form a second differential pair;

a first distance between the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members is smaller than a second distance between the mating interface portions of the first and second conductive members;

the second conductive member comprises a transition region between the intermediate portion and the mating interface portion;

at least one lossy member is disposed adjacent the mating interface portions of the second and third conductive members;

the at least one lossy member comprises a material having a conductivity between 1 Siemens/meter and 1×

10⁷ Siemens/meter; and

the at least one lossy member comprises at least one portion adapted to position the material having a conductivity between 1 Siemens/meter and 1×

10⁷ Siemens/meter adjacent the transition region of the second conductive member.

3. The electrical connector of claim 2, wherein the at least one portion protrudes towards the transition region of the second conductive member.

4. The electrical connector of claim 2, wherein:

the intermediate portion of each of the plurality of conductive members comprises an edge and a broadside; and

the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members are positioned edge to edge.

5. The electrical connector of claim 4, wherein the at least one lossy member is disposed between the first and second differential pairs.

6. The electrical connector of claim 2, wherein:

the intermediate portion of each of the plurality of conductive members comprises an edge and a broadside; and

the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members are positioned broadside to broadside.

7. The electrical connector of claim 6, wherein the at least one lossy member is elongated in a direction that is perpendicular to the column comprising the first, second, third, and fourth conductive members.

8. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein:

each of the plurality of conductive members further comprises a contact tail and an intermediate portion electrically coupling the contact tail and the mating interface portion;

the plurality of conductive members comprises first, second, third, and fourth conductive members disposed in a column;

the first and second conductive members form a first differential pair;

the third and fourth conductive members form a second differential pair;

a first distance between the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members is smaller than a second distance between the mating interface portions of the first and second conductive members;

the second conductive member comprises a transition region between the intermediate portion and the mating interface portion;

at least one lossy member is disposed adjacent the mating interface portions of the second and third conductive members;

the at least one lossy member comprises a material having a surface resistivity between 1 Ω

/square and 10⁶ Ω

/square; and

the at least one lossy member comprises at least one portion adapted to position the material having a surface resistivity between 1 Ω

/square and 10⁶ Ω

/square adjacent the transition region of the second conductive member.

9. The electrical connector of claim 8, wherein the at least one portion protrudes towards the transition region of the second conductive member.

10. The electrical connector of claim 8, wherein:

the intermediate portion of each of the plurality of conductive members comprises an edge and a broadside; and

the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members are positioned edge to edge.

11. The electrical connector of claim 10, wherein the at least one lossy member is disposed between the first and second differential pairs.

12. The electrical connector of claim 8, wherein:

the intermediate portion of each of the plurality of conductive members comprises an edge and a broadside; and

the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members are positioned broadside to broadside.

13. The electrical connector of claim 12, wherein the at least one lossy member is elongated in a direction that is perpendicular to the column comprising the first, second, third, and fourth conductive members.

14. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein:

each of the plurality of conductive members further comprises a contact tail and an intermediate portion electrically coupling the contact tail and the mating interface portion;

the plurality of conductive members comprises at least three conductive members disposed in a column;

at least one lossy member is disposed adjacent the mating interface portions of the column of conductive members;

the at least one lossy member is elongated in a direction that is parallel to the column; and

the at least one lossy member comprises a material having a conductivity between 1 Siemens/meter and 1×

10⁷ Siemens/meter.

15. The electrical connector of claim 14, wherein the column of conductive members is a first column, and wherein:

the plurality of conductive members further comprises a second column of conductive members, the second column being parallel to the first column; and

for at least one first conductive member in the first column, the first conductive member forms a differential pair with a corresponding second conductive member in the second column.

16. The electrical connector of claim 15, wherein:

the intermediate portion of each of the plurality of conductive members comprises an edge and a broadside; and

the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members are positioned broadside to broadside.

17. The electrical connector of claim 14, wherein:

the intermediate portions of the column of conductive members lie in a plane;

at least one conductive member in the column comprises a transition region between the intermediate portion of the conductive member and the mating interface portion of the conductive member;

the transition region of the conductive member jogs away from the plane so that the mating interface portion of the conductive member is not coplanar with the intermediate portions of the column of conductive members; and

the at least one lossy member comprises at least one portion adapted to position the material having a conductivity between 1 Siemens/meter and 1×

10⁷ Siemens/meter adjacent the transition region of the conductive member.

18. The electrical connector of claim 17, wherein the at least one portion protrudes towards the transition region of the conductive member.

19. The electrical connector of claim 1, wherein:

each of the plurality of conductive members further comprises a contact tail and an intermediate portion electrically coupling the contact tail and the mating interface portion;

the plurality of conductive members comprises at least three conductive members disposed in a column;

at least one lossy member is disposed adjacent the mating interface portions of the column of conductive members;

the at least one lossy member is elongated in a direction that is parallel to the column; and

the at least one lossy member comprises a material having a surface resistivity between 1 Ω

/square and 10⁶ Ω

/square.

20. The electrical connector of claim 19, wherein the column of conductive members is a first column, and wherein:

the plurality of conductive members further comprises a second column of conductive members, the second column being parallel to the first column; and

for at least one first conductive member in the first column, the first conductive member for is a differential pair with a corresponding second conductive member in the second column.

21. The electrical connector of claim 20, wherein:

the intermediate portion of each of the plurality of conductive members comprises an edge and a broadside; and

the intermediate portions of the first and second conductive members are positioned broadside to broadside.

22. The electrical connector of claim 19, wherein:

the intermediate portions of the column of conductive members lie in a plane;

at least one conductive member in the column comprises a transition region between the intermediate portion of the conductive member and the mating interface portion of the conductive member;

the transition region of the conductive member jogs away from the plane so that the mating interface portion of the conductive member is not coplanar with the intermediate portions of the column of conductive members; and

the at least one lossy member comprises at least one portion adapted to position the material having a conductivity between 1 Siemens/meter and 1×

10⁷ Siemens/meter adjacent the transition region of the conductive member.

23. The electrical connector of claim 22, wherein the at least one portion protrudes towards the transition region of the conductive member.
