Abstract

An electrical conductor, such as a wire or catheter, which is coated circumferentially with a ferromagnetic material in a selected region, is fed from a high frequency alternating current source. The ferromagnetic material has a quick response in heating and cooling to the controllable power delivery. The ferromagnetic material can be used for separating tissue, coagulation, tissue destruction or achieving other desired tissue effects in numerous surgical procedures.

Claims

1. A thermal surgical tool comprising an electrical conductor with a first section and a second section, and a ferromagnetic coating covering a portion of the electrical conductor between the first section and the second section, wherein the ferromagnetic coating is in electrically conductive communication with the electrical conductor and has a thickness of between 0.05 μ

m and 500 μ

m.

The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising a power source and wherein the electrical conductor is elongate and wherein the power source is attached to the electrical conductor independent of the ferromagnetic coating such that passing power through the electrical conductor heats the ferromagnetic coating.

3. The thermal surgical tool of claim 2, wherein the ferromagnetic coating has a thickness from 1 μ

m to 50 μ

m.

4. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, wherein the electrical conductor is formed into a geometry.

5. The thermal surgical tool of claim 4, wherein the electrical conductor geometry is selected from the group consisting of a flexible loop, a rigid loop, a square geometry, a pointed geometry, a hook geometry, and an angled geometry.

6. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, wherein the ferromagnetic coating comprises a plurality of ferromagnetic coatings disposed on the electrical conductor.

7. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising a thermal insulator disposed between the electrical conductor and the ferromagnetic coating.

8. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising a non-stick coating disposed upon the ferromagnetic coating.

9. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising a biocompatible material covering at least a portion of the ferromagnetic coating.

10. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, wherein the ferromagnetic coating is circumferentially disposed about the electrical conductor.

The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising an electrical circuit configured to deliver oscillating electrical energy to the electrical conductor by electrically connecting to the electrical circuit with the first section and the second section of the electrical conductor independent of the ferromagnetic coating.

12. The thermal surgical tool of claim 11, wherein the electrical circuit comprises an impedance matching circuit.

13. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising a primary geometry structure, wherein the electrical conductor is disposed on the primary geometry structure.

14. The thermal surgical tool of claim 13, wherein the primary geometry structure is selected from the group consisting of forceps, a scalpel, a spatula, a ball, a pointed geometry, and a catheter.

15. The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, further comprising a tube configured to contain the electrical conductor, wherein the electrical conductor is deployable from the tube.

The thermal surgical tool of claim 1, wherein the electrical conductor comprises a plurality of electrical conductors and the ferromagnetic coating comprises a plurality of ferromagnetic coatings, wherein the plurality of ferromagnetic coatings cover at least a portion of a respective one of the plurality of electrical conductors.

A thermal surgical tool for cutting or sealing a tissue disposed adjacent the thermal surgical tool, comprising an electrical conductor, and a ferromagnetic film covering a portion of the electrical conductor, the ferromagnetic film wrapping around the portion of the electrical conductor, wherein the ferromagnetic film is in electrically conductive communication with the electrical conductor and has a thickness of between about 0.05 μ

m and about 500 μ

m.

18. The thermal surgical tool of claim 17, wherein the ferromagnetic film has a thickness from about 0.05 to about 50 micrometers.

19. The thermal surgical tool of claim 17, wherein the thickness of the ferromagnetic film varies by less than 5 micrometers.

The thermally adjustable surgical tool of claim 17, further comprising a primary geometry structure, wherein the electrical conductor is attached to the primary geometry structure, and further comprising a sensor disposed on the primary geometry structure for monitoring at least one of the ferromagnetic film, the electrical conductor and tissue.

21. The thermally adjustable surgical tool of claim 20, wherein the primary geometry structure comprises forceps having at least two tips and the electrical conductor comprises at least one of a plurality of electrical conductors disposed on at least one of the at least two tips.

22. The thermally adjustable surgical tool of claim 21, wherein the sensor is positioned on another of the at least two tips.

23. The thermally adjustable surgical tool of claim 20, wherein the sensor is configured to measure at least one of temperature, transferred heat, and tissue properties.
