Abstract

A wireless power transmitter can include a transmitting coil configured to wirelessly transmit power to a receiving coil. The wireless power transmitter can include a shield residing on a given side of a substrate spaced apart from the transmitting coil. The shield can be configured to filter an electric field induced by the transmitting coil.

Claims

1. A wireless power transmitter comprising:

a transmitting coil configured to wirelessly transmit power to a receiving coil; and

a shield residing on a given side of a substrate spaced apart from the transmitting coil, the shield being configured to filter an electric field induced by the transmitting coil, wherein the shield includes a trace forming a planar pattern of a conductive material that extends across a perimeter of a footprint of the transmitting coil, wherein the trace has a first end coupled to a base region of the shield and extends from the base region to terminate in a second end that is distal from the base region of the shield, wherein the trace of the shield comprises a plurality of spaced apart traces, wherein each trace has a first end coupled to the base region of the shield and extends from the base region to terminate in a second end thereof that is distal the base region of the shield, wherein the shield is a first shield and the wireless power transmitter further comprises;

a second shield disposed on another side of the substrate, wherein the another side of the substrate opposes the given side of the substrate, the second shield having a plurality of traces of conductive material, wherein each trace of the second shield extends from a base region of the second shield in a pattern that interleaves with corresponding traces of the first shield;

a third shield having the transmitting coil disposed thereon, the third shield comprising a disc of ferrite; and

a fourth shield having the third shield disposed thereon, the fourth shield comprising a plate, screen or film of a conductive material.

2. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of spaced apart traces extending substantially linearly from a common edge of the base region, each adjacent pair of traces being spaced apart from each other such that the pattern has a comb shape.

3. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of spaced apart traces is curved.

4. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, further comprising a fifth shield to house the wireless power transmitter, the fifth shield being formed of a conductive material and having an opening to expose a footprint of the transmitting coil.

5. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the planar pattern has a spiral shape.

8. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a sheet of insulating material.

9. The wireless power transmitter of claim 8, wherein the sheet is spaced apart from the coil by a distance of about 0.1 mm to about 10 mm.

10. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the shield attenuates a magnetic field induced by the transmitting coil by about 2% or less.

11. The wireless power transmitter of claim 1, wherein the electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by the transmitting coil is reduced by at least 6 dB for third and higher harmonics of an operating frequency of the transmitting coil.

6. A wireless power transmitter comprising:

a transmitting coil configured to wirelessly transmit power to a receiving coil; and

a shield residing on a given side of a substrate spaced apart from the transmitting coil, the shield being configured to filter an electric field induced by the transmitting coil, wherein the shield includes a trace forming a planar pattern of a conductive material that extends across a perimeter of a footprint of the transmitting coil, wherein the trace has a first end coupled to a base region of the shield and extends from the base region to terminate in a second end that is distal from the base region of the shield, wherein the planar pattern is a first planar pattern, and the substrate comprises a sheet of electrically insulating material and the shield is a first shield on the given side surface of the sheet and the wireless power transmitter further comprises a second shield disposed on another side surface of the sheet, wherein the another side surface of the sheet opposes the first side surface of the sheet, the second shield including a trace of conductive material in the form of a second planar pattern that that includes a trace of conductive material that is interleaved with the first planar pattern formed by the trace of the first shield.

7. The wireless power transmitter of claim 6, wherein a footprint of the transmitting coil is substantially covered by a projection of an interleaving pattern formed by the first and second patterns in a plan view.

12. A wireless power transfer system comprising:

a transmitter comprising;

a source comprising circuitry mounted on a printed circuit board;

a transmitting coil configured to wirelessly transfer electrical power from the transmitting coil to a receiving coil, wherein the transmitting coil and the receiving coil are spaced apart; and

a shield spaced apart from and positioned between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil, the shield configured to filter an electric field induced by the transmitting coil, wherein the shield has a trace of conductive material forming a planar pattern, wherein the trace has a first end that is coupled to a base region of the shield and that extends from the base region to terminate in a second end that is distal from the base region of the shield, wherein the planar pattern is a first planar pattern, the shield is a first shield, and the trace of the first shield resides on a given side of a substrate, wherein the wireless power transmitter system further comprises a second shield residing on another side of the substrate, wherein the another side of the substrate opposes the given side of the substrate, the second shield having a trace of conductive material that forms a second planar pattern that is interleaved with the first pattern formed by the trace of the first shield to form an interleaving pattern, wherein a projection of the interleaving pattern substantially covers a footprint of the coil in a plan view.

13. The wireless power transfer system of claim 12, the transmitter further comprising

a third shield formed of ferrite wherein the transmitting coil is disposed on the third shield;

and

a fourth shield formed of a conductive material wherein the third shield is disposed on the fourth shield.

14. The wireless power transfer system of claim 13, the transmitter further comprising a fifth shield formed of a conductive material, the fifth shield being configured to house the transmitter and the fifth shield including an opening configured to expose a footprint of the transmitting coil to the receiving coil.

15. The wireless power transfer system of claim 12, further comprising:

a receiver comprising;

circuitry mounted on a printed circuit board;

a receiving coil configured to couple the electrical power wirelessly transferred from the transmitting coil to a load; and

a shield spaced apart from and positioned between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil, the shield configured to filter an electric field induced by the transmitting coil, wherein the shield has a trace of conductive material forming a planar pattern, wherein the trace has a first end that is coupled to a base region of the shield and that extends from the base region to terminate in a second end that is distal from the base region of the shield.

16. A wireless power transfer system comprising:

a transmitting coil coupled to circuitry;

a receiving coil spaced apart from the transmitting coil, wherein the transmitting coil is configured to wirelessly induce a current on the receiving coil; and

a substrate formed of an insulating material, the substrate being spaced apart from and positioned between the transmitting coil and the receiving coil, the substrate comprising;

a first shield residing on a given side of the substrate; and

a second shield residing on another side of the substrate, wherein the another side of the substrate opposes the given side of the substrate;

wherein the first shield and the second shield each have a trace of conductive material that has a first end that is coupled to a respective base region and that extends from the respective base region to terminate in a second end that is distal from the respective base region, wherein the trace of the first shield and the second shield forms an interleaving pattern, wherein a projection of the interleaving pattern substantially covers a footprint of the transmitting coil.

17. The wireless power transfer system of claim 16, wherein the first and second shields are configured to filter an electric field induced by the transmitting coil while attenuating a magnetic field induced by the transmitting coil by less than about 2%.
