1. A device that converts a mechanical motion into acoustic energy, the device comprising:

  • a multi-layer diaphragm, wherein at least one of the layers is a damping layer that is positioned between two other layers;

    drive electronics;

    at least one support; and

    at least one mechanical-to-acoustical transducer including a distal portion coupled to the diaphragm and a proximal portion coupled to the support, wherein movement of the transducer causes movement of the diaphragm in a direction that is generally transverse to the direction of the movement of the transducer.
