A method of inducing differentiation of neural progenitor cells comprising co-culturing neural progenitor cells with isolated umbilicus-derived cells isolated from human umbilical cord tissue substantially free of blood, wherein the co-culturing induces the differentiation of the neural progenitor cells, and wherein the isolated umbilicus cells are capable of self-renewal and expansion in culture, have the potential to differentiate into cells of at least a neural phenotype, maintain a normal karyotype upon passaging and lack production of CD117.
