1. A method, with an information processing system, for detecting objects in a digital image, the method comprising:

  • receiving at least one image representing at least one frame of a video sequence of an external environment of a vehicle;

    identifying a set of environmental conditions associated with a geographic area corresponding to a location of the vehicle;

    selecting an illumination model based on the set of environmental conditions;

    processing the at least one image with respect to the illumination mode;

    retrieving at least one object template associated with an object of interest;

    selecting an object appearance model based on the set of environmental conditions;

    processing the at least one object template with respect to the illumination model and object appearance model;

    analyzing the at least one image that has been processed with respect to the at least one object template that has been processed; and

    determining, based on the analyzing, if the at least one image that has been processed comprises the object of interest.
