1. A method to determine brand exposures included in a media presentation, the method comprising:
- determining, with a processor, whether a scene detected from a media stream corresponding to the media presentation matches a reference scene;
identifying, with the processor, a first region of interest in the detected scene based on stored information describing a corresponding first region of interest in the reference scene in response to determining that both;
(a) the detected scene matched the reference scene and (b) the detected scene has not been classified to have a scene of no interest classification from among a set of at least four possible classifications including the scene of no interest classification, a repeated scene of interest classification, a repeated scene of changed interest classification different from the repeated scene of interest classification, and a new scene classification; and
when the first region of interest is identified in the detected scene, reporting, with the processor, whether a first reference brand identifier associated with the reference scene is included in the first region of interest identified in the detected scene.

Abstract
Methods and apparatus to measure brand exposure in media streams are disclosed. An example method to determine brand exposures included in media content disclosed herein comprises determining whether a scene detected from a media stream corresponding to the media content matches a reference scene, identifying an expected region of interest in the detected scene based on information describing the reference scene when the detected scene is determined to match the reference scene and the reference scene is not specified to be a scene of no interest, and determining whether a reference brand identifier associated with the reference scene is included in the expected region of interest identified in the detected scene.

20. An apparatus to measure brand exposure associated with media provided by a media stream, the apparatus comprising:

a processor to implement a scene recognizer and a brand recognizer; the scene recognizer including; a scene detector to divide the media stream into a plurality of detected scenes, each detected scene including a sequence of image frames having substantially similar signatures; and a scene classifier to compare a detected scene in the plurality of detected scenes to a plurality of reference scenes to classify the detected scene based on stored information associated with a first reference scene; and the brand recognizer including; a region of interest detector to identify a first region of interest in the detected scene based on a description of a corresponding first region of interest included in the stored information associated with the first reference scene in response to having determined that the scene recognizer has both;
(a) determined that the detected scene matched the first reference scene and (b) not classified the detected scene to have a scene of no interest classification from among a set of at least four possible classifications including the scene of no interest classification, a repeated scene of interest classification, repeated scene of changed interest classification different from the repeated scene of interest classification, and a new scene classification; anda brand identifier matcher to compare the first region of interest in the detected scene to a plurality of templates corresponding to a first reference brand identifier to determine whether the first reference brand identifier is presented in the first region of interest of the detected scene. - View Dependent Claims (21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26)

27. A system to measure brand exposure associated with a media presentation, the system comprising:

a brand exposure monitor implemented by a processor to determine brand exposure information representative of brand identifiers embedded in regions of interest in detected scenes of the media presentation, the brand exposure monitor to; identify a first region of interest in a detected scene based on information describing a corresponding first region of interest in a reference scene from a plurality of reference scenes in response to having determined that;
(a) the detected scene matched the reference scene and (b) the reference scene has been classified as a scene of interest;when a first brand identifier is determined to be included in the first region of interest in the detected scene, track variations in locations of the first brand identifier across video frames forming the detected scene to determine a weighted location for the first brand identifier in the detected scene, the weighted location determined by combining different locations for the first brand identifier weighted by durations of exposure at the different locations; and include the weighted location in the brand exposure information; and an audience measurement system to determine audience exposure information and to combine the brand exposure information and the audience exposure information to measure audience exposure to the first brand identifier. - View Dependent Claims (28, 29)
