Abstract

The present invention is an atherectomy catheter with a rotary cutting knife that is driven from the distal (nose) or side (circumference) direction. The catheter collects plaque shavings in a hollow collection chamber mounted in between the rotary cutting knife and the main catheter tubing. In contrast to prior art designs, which utilized nose mounted plaque collection chambers, the present design is able to store a substantially larger volume of removed plaque, thus increasing the length of time and amount of plaque removal that can be accomplished before the catheter must be removed from the body and cleaned. This decreases medical procedure time, allows for more complete and careful plaque removal, and reduces the burden on the patient and physician.

Claims

1. A catheter for removing tissue comprising:

an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end;

a drive shaft within the elongate body extending from adjacent the proximal end of the elongate body toward the distal end of the elongate body, the drive shaft being rotatable about a first rotational axis;

a tissue cutting element configured to rotate relative to the elongate body about a second rotational axis; and

a transmission mechanism indirectly coupling the drive shaft to the tissue cutting element, the transmission mechanism configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to the tissue cutting element to impart rotation of the tissue cutting element about the second rotational axis,

wherein the elongate body includes a material collection chamber disposed proximally of the tissue cutting element.

2. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the transmission mechanism includes a first transmission gear associated with the drive shaft and a second transmission gear associated with the tissue cutting element.

3. The catheter of claim 2, wherein the transmission shaft operatively connects the first and second transmission gears to one another.

4. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the elongate body further comprises a deflectable nose region at the distal end thereof, and a mechanism to allow an operator to deflect the nose region against a body lumen.

5. The catheter of claim 4, wherein the second rotational axis is offset from the first rotational axis when the nose region is deflected.

6. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the elongate body has a tubular sidewall having a distal portion with a window, wherein the tissue cutting element is extendable through the window.

7. The catheter of claim 1, wherein the tissue cutting element is configured to direct cut tissue proximally and into the material collection chamber.

8. The catheter of claim 7, wherein no portion of the drive shaft is contained within the material collection chamber.

9. The catheter of claim 1, further comprising a source of rotational power operatively connected to the drive shaft for imparting rotation of the tissue cutting element.

10. The catheter of claim 9, further comprising a handle connected at the proximal end of the elongate body, the source of rotational power being contained within the handle.

11. A catheter for removing tissue comprising:

an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end;

a tissue cutting element adjacent the distal end of the elongate body and configured for rotation relative to the elongate body about a first rotational axis;

a drive shaft configured for rotation relative to the elongate body about a second rotational axis;

a gearing mechanism connecting the drive shaft to the tissue cutting element, the gearing mechanism configured to transfer torque from the drive shaft to the tissue cutting elements wherein the elongate body includes a material collection chamber disposed proximally of the tissue cutting element,

wherein the gearing mechanism is disposed outside the material collection chamber.

12. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the gearing mechanism comprises a first gear associated with the tissue cutting element, and a second gear associated with the drive shaft, wherein the drive shaft is coupled to the first and second gears.

13. The catheter of claim 12, wherein the second rotational axis is offset from the first rotational axis.

14. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the second rotational axis is offset from the first rotational axis.

15. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the drive shaft is transmission drive shaft, the catheter further comprising a second drive shaft positioned within the elongate body and extending from adjacent the proximal end of the elongate body toward the distal end of the elongate body, the second drive shaft rotatable about a third rotational axis and coupled to the transmission drive shaft to impart rotation to the transmission drive shaft about the second rotational axis.

16. The catheter of claim 15, wherein the second and third rotational axes are radially offset from one another.

17. The catheter of claim 11, wherein the tissue cutting element is configured to direct cut tissue proximally and into the material collection chamber.

18. The catheter of claim 17, wherein no portion of the drive shaft is contained within the material collection chamber.
