Abstract

In embodiments of the present invention improved capabilities are described for systems and methods that employ a control component and/or power source integrated in an LED based light source to control and/or power the LED light source wirelessly. In embodiments, the LED based light source may take the form of a standard light bulb that plugs into a standard lighting socket or fixture.

Claims

1. An emergency lighting detection apparatus comprising:

an electric power interface to be placed in electrical communication with an emergency lighting circuit;

a detector configured to detect, via the electric power interface, an application of electric power to the emergency lighting circuit; and

a transmitter configured to wirelessly transmit a first control signal to at least one wireless lighting module to turn on the at least one wireless lighting module in response to the detector detecting an application of electric power to the emergency lighting circuit.

2. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an input to operatively connect an energy storage device to provide power to the emergency lighting detection apparatus.

3. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first control signal comprises an on signal.

4. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first control signal is transmitted based on at least one of:

a change in electric power of the emergency lighting circuit, a result of a timer, a time of day, an environmental sensor output signal, or an emergency lighting circuit control signal.

The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein the detector is further configured to detect an absence of power or a decrease in power of the emergency lighting circuit and to trigger the transmitter to transmit a second control signal to the at least one wireless light module to reverse the lighting action.

6. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 5, wherein reversing the lighting action comprises turning the at least one wireless lighting module off.

7. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an energy storage device, wherein the energy storage device comprises at least one of:

a rechargeable battery, a non-rechargeable battery, a photovoltaic cell, a fuel cell, or a capacitor.

8. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

the at least one wireless lighting module comprises a first plurality of wireless lighting modules, each of the first plurality of wireless lighting modules being part of a first group; and

, wherein;

the first control signal indicates a request to turn on the wireless lighting modules in the first group.

9. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 8, wherein:

the at least one wireless lighting module comprises a second plurality of wireless lighting modules each of which is part of a second group that is different from the first group, and wherein the transmitter is further configured to transmit a second control signal comprising at least one of an on signal, dim signal, or an off signal, indicating a lighting action to be performed by the wireless lighting modules in the second group; and

wherein the second control signal is different from the first control signal.

10. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

an internal light module that provides at least one of;

a source of light when the emergency lighting detection apparatus is removed from the emergency lighting circuit, or a source of light while the emergency lighting detection apparatus is connected to the emergency lighting circuit.

11. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, wherein the emergency lighting detection apparatus further comprises a control interface configured to receive user input commands.

12. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 11, wherein the control interface is configured to receive user input commands wirelessly from a cellular phone.

13. The emergency lighting detection apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a sensor that detects one of ambient light or motion; and

a controller for controlling the least one wireless lighting module based on input from the sensor.

14. An emergency lighting system configured to provide wireless control to a remote wireless light source, the emergency lighting system comprising:

a lighting device including a first light source, a device controller and an emergency lighting detection apparatus including a wireless transmitter configured to transmit a power loss signal in response to detection of an absence of power from a first power source input; and

at least one wireless lighting module including a second light source, a wireless receiver, and a module controller configured to selectively control application of power from an emergency power source input to the second light source in response to detection of the power loss signal provided by the emergency lighting detection apparatus.

15. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the lighting device further comprises an emergency power source comprising an energy storage device.

16. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the lighting device comprises a bulb, tube, lamp, lighting fixture, or retrofit fixture.

17. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the emergency lighting detection apparatus is located within a housing of the lighting device.

18. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the power loss signal is additionally generated in response to a signal generated by the device controller.

19. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the at least one wireless lighting module further comprises a radio frequency (RF) receiver and the power loss signal is wirelessly transmitted to the radio frequency (RF) receiver.

20. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the transmitter is configured to transmit messages in the presence of power at the power input to signal the at least one wireless lighting module to maintain a present operating state of the at least one wireless lighting module.

21. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the lighting device comprises a night light or a rechargeable flashlight.

22. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the wireless lighting module comprises a ceiling light, a wall light, a step light, a portable lamp, a task light, or a spotlight.

23. The emergency lighting system of claim 14, wherein the wireless lighting module comprises an energy storage device.

24. The emergency lighting system of claim 23, wherein the wireless lighting module further comprises of a connection to grid power.
