Abstract

A transformer structure includes a first coil having two sections of spiral, with a top section including a plurality of metal layers occupying top X metal layers and a bottom section including a plurality of metal layers occupying bottom Z metal layers, where X and Z represent a number of metal layers having a specific number selected to provide a particular performance of the first coil. A second coil of the transformer is disposed between the two sections of the first coil and includes a plurality of metal layers where Y represents a number of vertically adjacent metal layers, with the specific number chosen to provide the particular performance, such that a sum X+Y+Z represents a total number of vertical metal layers for the transformer structure.

Claims

1. A transformer structure, comprising:

a first coil including two sections of spiral, with a top section including a plurality of metal layers with a folded spiral occupying top X metal layers and a bottom section including a plurality of metal layers occupying bottom Z metal layers, where X and Z represent a number of metal layers having a specific number selected to provide a particular performance of the first coil; and

a second coil of the transformer is disposed between the two sections of the first coil and including a plurality of metal layers where Y represents a number of vertically adjacent metal layers, with the specific number chosen to provide the particular performance, such that a sum X+Y+Z represents a total number of vertical metal layers for the transformer structure,

wherein the folded spiral includes a reversal of direction of a shape and a subsequent following of the shape in a reversed direction.

2. The structure as recited in claim 1, further comprising at least one metal layer disposed within the sum of adjacent metal layers that is skipped and free of coils.

3. The structure as recited in claim 1, further comprising at least one radial wiring channel which passes through a portion of a spiral of the second coil to provide an external connection to an internal terminal of one of the coils.

4. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the top section includes one of a folded solenoid shape, multi-layered solenoid shape and a folded conical shape.

5. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the bottom section includes a parallel stacked spiral having two or more metal layers connected with a continuous via pattern.

6. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the second coil includes multiple adjacent layers of spiral coils connected in parallel.

7. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the first coil includes windings having a decreased width and increased spacing, as compared to windings of the second coil, from an outermost turn to an innermost turn, to reduce series losses.

8. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the first coil includes windings that include a finer spacing than windings in the second coil to increase the turns ratio.

9. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein windings of the two sections of the first coil include one section with a wider track width than the other section to reduce series losses and increase current handling.

10. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein windings of the first coil are offset from the second coil to increase performance.

11. The structure as recited in claim 1, wherein the second coil includes a spiral having a gradually decreasing width and increasing spacing from outermost turn to an innermost turn.

12. A transformer structure, comprising:

a first coil including two sections of spiral, with a top section including a folded spiral occupying top X metal layers and a bottom section including a parallel stacked spiral occupying bottom Z metal layers, where X and Z represent a number of metal layers having a specific number selected to provide a particular performance; and

a second coil of the transformer is disposed between the two sections of the first coil and including a parallel stacked spiral of Y metals with gradually decreasing width and increasing spacing from outermost turn to an innermost turn, where Y represents a number of vertically adjacent metal layers, with the specific number chosen to provide the particular performance, such that a sum X+Y+Z represents a total number of vertically adjacent metal layers for the transformer structure,

wherein the folded spiral includes a reversal of direction of a shape and a subsequent following of the shape in a reversed direction.

13. The structure as recited in claim 12, further comprising at least one metal layer disposed within the sum of adjacent metal layers that is skipped and free of coils.

14. The structure as recited in claim 12, further comprising at least one radial wiring channel which passes through a portion of a spiral of the second coil to provide an external connection to an internal terminal of one of the coils.

15. The structure as recited in claim 12, wherein the folded spiral includes one of a folded solenoid shape, multi-layered solenoid shape and a folded conical shape.

16. The structure as recited in claim 12, wherein the parallel stacked spiral includes two or more metal layers connected with a continuous via pattern.

17. The structure as recited in claim 12, wherein the first coil includes windings having a decreased width and increased spacing, as compared to windings of the second coil, from an outermost turn to an innermost turn, to reduce series losses.

18. The structure as recited in claim 12, wherein the first coil includes windings that include a finer spacing than windings in the second coil to increase the turns ratio.

19. The structure as recited in claim 12, wherein windings of the two sections of the first coil include one section with a wider track width than the other section to reduce series losses and increase current handling.

20. The structure as recited in claim 12, wherein windings of the first coil are offset from the second coil to increase performance.
