1. An imaging system for electromagnetic radiation, comprising:

  • (1) a photodetector array; and

    (2) a microarray on a substrate comprising a plurality of addressable regions, each addressable region having a first layer comprising;

    (a) a first nucleic acid moiety attached to the substrate; and

    (b) a first plurality of filter particles having attached thereto a second nucleic acid moiety capable of hybridizing to the first nucleic acid moiety on a selected addressable region of the microarray; and

    wherein at least one addressable region further comprises a second layer comprising;

    a second plurality of filter particles having attached thereto a third nucleic acid moiety capable of hybridizing to the second nucleic acid moiety; and

    wherein the layers of filter particles in at least two addressable regions are configured to allow passage of different selected wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation through the filter particles; and

    wherein the photodetector array is configured to detect at least one wavelength of electromagnetic radiation that has passed through the filter particles.
