Abstract

Methods and apparatus are disclosed to scan a wireless communication spectrum. An example method disclosed herein includes causing a first scanner to determine, for a frequency of a wireless communication spectrum, a decoded base station identifier, causing a second scanner to determine a plurality of signal strengths at the frequency without determining a base station identifier, and determining that the base station identifier is associated with a subset of the plurality of signal strengths by comparing at least one of timestamps and locations associated with the base station identifier and the plurality of signal strengths.

Claims

1. A method to improve data correlation from multiple scanners comprising:

identifying, with a processor, a deficiency in a first measurement record from a first scanner that has captured signal strength measurements of a wireless communication spectrum;

determining a type of the deficiency in the first measurement record;

when the type of the deficiency is associated with an insufficient location measurement, correcting a lack of a base station identifier in the first measurement record by correlating the first measurement record from the first scanner to a second measurement record including the base station identifier from a second scanner based on timestamp information indicating the second measurement record corresponds to a first time window, the timestamp information being in the first and the second measurement records; and

when the type of deficiency is not associated with the insufficient location measurement, correcting the lack of the base station identifier in the first measurement record by correlating the first measurement record from the first scanner to the second measurement record including the base station identifier from the second scanner based on geographic location information indicating the second measurement record corresponds to a same physical location as the first measurement record, the geographic location information being in the first and the second measurement records.

A method as defined in claim 1, further including, in response to correlating the first measurement record to the second measurement record, identifying a base station associated with a frequency from at least one of the first measurement record or the second measurement record by matching (a) a base station identification code decoded from a control channel of the base station to (b) signal strengths associated with the control channel.

3. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the geographic location information is gathered from at least one of a measured control channel or a global positioning system.

4. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the first scanner measures the signal strength of a frequency while scanning the wireless communication spectrum.

5. A method as defined in claim 4, wherein the second scanner decodes a base station identification code associated with the frequency.

A method as defined in claim 1, further including, in response to identifying no deficiency in the first measurement record, correlating the first measurement record from the first scanner to the second measurement record of the second scanner based on the timestamp information and the geographic location information in the first and the second measurement records.

7. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the deficiency in the first measurement record is identified before the second scanner scans the wireless communication spectrum.

8. A method as defined in claim 1, wherein the same physical location corresponds to a same latitude and a same longitude.

9. A tangible computer readable storage medium comprising instructions that, when executed, cause a machine to at least:

identify a deficiency in a first measurement record from a first scanner that has captured signal strength measurements of a wireless communication spectrum;

determine a type of the deficiency in the first measurement record;

when the type of the deficiency is associated with an insufficient location measurement, correct a lack of a base station identifier in the first measurement record by correlating the first measurement record from the first scanner to a second measurement record including the base station identifier from a second scanner based on timestamp information indicating the second measurement record corresponds to a first time window, the timestamp information being in the first and the second measurement records; and

when the type of deficiency is not associated with the insufficient location measurement, correct the lack of the base station identifier in the first measurement record by correlating the first measurement record from the first scanner to the second measurement record including the base station identifier from the second scanner based on geographic location information indicating the second measurement record corresponds to a same physical location as the first measurement record, the geographic location information being in the first and the second measurement records.

A storage medium as defined in claim 9, wherein the instructions, when executed, cause the machine to, in response to correlating the first measurement record to a second measurement record, identify a base station associated with the signal strength measurements based on at least one of the first measurement record or the second measurement record.

11. A storage medium as defined in claim 9, wherein the geographic location information is gathered from at least one of a measured control channel or a global positioning system.

12. A storage medium as defined in claim 9, wherein the deficiency in the first measurement record is identified before the second scanner captures the signal strength measurements.

13. A storage medium as defined in claim 9, wherein the first scanner captures signal strength measurements of a frequency in the wireless communication spectrum without decoding a base station identification code associated with the frequency.

14. A storage medium as defined in claim 13, wherein the second scanner scans the frequency to decode the base station identification code associated with the frequency.

15. A storage medium as defined in claim 9, wherein the instructions further cause the machine to, in response to identifying no deficiency in the first measurement record, correlate the first measurement record from the first scanner to the second measurement record of the second scanner based on the timestamp information and the geographic location information in the first and the second measurement records.

16. A storage medium as defined in claim 9, wherein the same physical location corresponds to a same latitude and a same longitude.

17. An apparatus to correlate data from multiple scanners comprising:

a first scanner to capture first signal strength measurements of a wireless communication spectrum to form a first measurement record;

a second scanner to form a second measurement record by capturing second signal strength measurements of the wireless communication spectrum and determining a base station identifier associated with the second signal strength measurements;

a timestamper to determine timestamp information indicating the second measurement record corresponds to a first time window, the timestamp information being in the first and the second measurement records;

a geographic locator to determine geographic location information indicating the second measurement record corresponds to a same physical location as the first measurement record, the geographic location information being in the first and the second measurement records; and

a correlator to;

determine a type of deficiency in the first measurement record;

when the type of the deficiency is associated with an insufficient location measurement, correct a lack of the base station identifier in the first measurement record by correlating the first measurement record to the second measurement record based on the timestamp information; and

when the type of deficiency is not associated with the insufficient location measurement, correct the lack of the base station identifier in the first measurement record by correlating the first measurement record to the second measurement record based on the geographic location information.

18. An apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein, in response to correlating the first measurement record to the second measurement record, the first scanner is to identify a base station associated with the first signal strength measurements based on the base station identifier determined by the second scanner.

19. An apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein the geographic locator is to use at least one of a measured control channel or a global positioning system to determine the geographic location information.

20. An apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein the deficiency in the first measurement record is identified before the second scanner captures the second signal strength measurements.

21. An apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein the first scanner captures first signal strength measurements of a frequency while scanning the wireless communication spectrum.

22. An apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein the correlator is to, in response to identifying no deficiency in the first measurement record, correlate the first measurement record to the second measurement record based on the timestamp information and the geographic location information in the first and the second measurement records.

23. An apparatus as defined in claim 17, wherein the same physical location corresponds to a same latitude and a same longitude.
