- an electrical power system configured to provide electrical power at multiple frequencies to an electrode of a catheter;
an electrical parameter measurement module configured to measure electrical parameters at each of said multiple frequencies;
an assessment module configured to;
identify one frequency of said multiple frequencies where a first measurement of a first electrical parameter of said electrical parameters is at a predetermined value; and
assess a coupling between the electrode and a tissue based on a subsequent measured change of said first electrical parameter at said one frequency relative to said predetermined value.

Abstract
An electrode catheter and a method for assessing electrode-tissue contact and coupling are disclosed. An exemplary electrode catheter comprises an electrode adapted to apply electrical energy. A measurement circuit is adapted to measure impedance between the electrode and ground as the electrode approaches a target tissue. A processor determines a contact and coupling condition for the target tissue based at least in part on reactance of the impedance measured by the measurement circuit. In another exemplary embodiment, the electrode catheter determines the contact and coupling condition based at least in part on a phase angle of the impedance.

9. A medical system comprising:

an electrical power system configured to provide electrical power to an electrode of a catheter, wherein said electrical power system sequentially provides said electrical power at multiple frequencies between a low frequency and a high frequency; an electrical parameter measurement module configured to measure first impedance parameters for each of said multiple frequencies between said low frequency and said high frequency; an assessment module configured to generate at least one baseline coupling condition based on one of said first impedance parameters having a predetermined value for one identified frequency of said multiple frequencies between said low frequency and said high frequency; wherein subsequent to generating said at least one baseline coupling condition, said electrical power system is configured for applying ablation energy to the electrode for treatment of a tissue; and subsequent to applying said ablation energy, said electrical power system is configured to generate an output indicative of lesion formation based on a measured change of said one of said first impedance parameters for said one identified frequency. - View Dependent Claims (10, 11, 12, 13)
