Abstract

A multidirectional control system with shear feedback, comprising at least one stationary body, a plurality of tactors disposed within the at least one movable body or the at least one stationary body. In some embodiments, a moveable body is included, such that the tactors have at least one degree of freedom of motion with respect to the stationary body or the moveable body within which they are disposed and are operable to engage target areas of a user'"'"'s skin; and a plurality of actuators capable of moving the tactors.

Claims

1. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback, comprising:

a stationary body;

a movable body;

a tactor disposed in connection with the movable body or the stationary body, such that the tactor has at least one degree of freedom of motion with respect to the body in connection with which it is disposed and has a contact surface that is operable to engage a target area of a user'"'"'s skin;

an opening defined in an outer surface of the moveable body or the stationary body, an uppermost portion of the contact surface of the tactor being within the opening or recessed below the opening;

a restraint adjacent to and disposed in the outer surface, the restraint restraining the user'"'"'s skin adjacent the target area, the restraint having an upper edge and a lower edge with a sloped surface therebetween, the opening being located at the lower edge of the restraint; and

an actuator capable of moving the tactor.

2. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, wherein the movable body is disposed in connection with the stationary body, such that the movable body has at least one degree of freedom of motion with respect to the stationary body.

3. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, and a sensor capable of detecting a change in position of or force applied to the movable body.

4. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 3, further comprising a computer system capable of receiving information from the at least one sensor and of sending instructions to the actuator.

5. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, further comprising:

a restraint disposed on the movable body, configured to isolate the target area of the user'"'"'s skin.

6. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 5, wherein the target area of the user'"'"'s skin is on a finger, a thumb, or a palm of the user.

7. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 5, wherein the restraint is a well configured to secure skin adjacent to the target area of the user'"'"'s skin.

8. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, wherein the outer surface includes a depression configured to engage a user'"'"'s thumb, a user'"'"'s finger, or a user'"'"'s palm.

9. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 8, wherein the depression is formed by a raised edge.

10. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 9, wherein the raised edge is curved.

11. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 10, wherein the curved raised edge is configured to guide the user'"'"'s thumb or finger toward a center of the opening.

12. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 9, wherein the raised edge is substantially straight.

13. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 9, wherein the depression includes a plurality of raised edges.

14. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, wherein the tactor is capable of moving in a two-dimensional space and substantially tangential to the target area of the user'"'"'s skin.

15. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, further comprising one or more sensors capable of detecting a change in position of or force applied to the tactor.

16. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 1, wherein the outer surface includes a groove formed therein.

17. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback, comprising:

a stationary body;

a tactor disposed in connection with the stationary body, such that the tactor has at least one degree of freedom of motion with respect to the stationary body and has a contact surface that is operable to engage a target area of a user'"'"'s skin;

an opening defined in an outer surface of the moveable body or the stationary body, an uppermost portion of the contact surface of the tactor being disposed within the opening or recessed below the opening;

a restraint adjacent to and disposed in the outer surface, the restraint restraining the user'"'"'s skin surrounding the target area, the restraint having an upper edge and a lower edge with a sloped surface therebetween, the opening being located at the lower edge of the restraint, wherein the sloped surface surrounds the opening; and

an actuator capable of moving the tactor.

18. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 17, further comprising a computer system capable of sending instructions to the at least one actuator.

19. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 18, wherein the computer system is a mobile device.

20. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 17, further comprising:

a restraint disposed on the stationary body and configured to isolate at least one target area of the user'"'"'s skin.

21. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 20, wherein the restraint is a well configured to secure a distal phalange and/or a hand of the user and to secure a target area on the distal phalange or a palm of the user.

22. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 20, wherein the restraint is a well configured to secure skin adjacent to at least one target area of the user'"'"'s skin.

23. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 17, wherein the at least one target area of the user'"'"'s skin is the skin on a thumb, a finger, or a palm of the user.

24. A multidirectional controller with shear feedback of claim 17, wherein the tactor is capable of moving in a two-dimensional space and substantially tangential to the target area of the user'"'"'s skin.

25. A method of providing a directional feedback, comprising:

directing a computer system to instruct at least one tactor of a multidirectional controller to move from an original location to an instructed location, such that the direction of a vector determined by the original location and the instructed location of the at least one tactor is the direction that corresponds to the directional feedback intended to be provided to the user, the multi directional controller including;

a stationary body;

a movable body, the at least one tactor being disposed in connection with the movable body or the stationary body, such that the at least one tactor has at least one degree of freedom of motion with respect to the body in connection with which it is disposed and has a contact surface that is operable to engage a target area of a user'"'"'s skin;

an opening defined in an outer surface of the moveable body or the stationary body, an uppermost portion of the contact surface of the at least one tactor being within the opening or recessed below the opening;

a restraint adjacent to and disposed in the outer surface, the restraint restraining the user'"'"'s skin adjacent the target area, the restraint having an upper edge and a lower edge with a sloped surface therebetween, the opening being located at the lower edge of the restraint; and

an actuator capable of moving the at least one tactor.

26. A method of claim 25, wherein:

the at least one tactor includes;

a first tactor capable of moving in a first two-dimensional space defined by two perpendicular axes; and

a second tactor capable of moving in a second two-dimensional space defined by two perpendicular axes;

wherein one of the axes in the first two-dimensional space is different from one of the axes in the second two-dimensional space; and

wherein the computer system instructs the first tactor to move to a specific location to create a direction vector in a first two-dimensional space and instructs the second tactor to move to a specific location to create a direction vector in a second two-dimensional space.
