Systems and methods for vehicle speed management
First Claim
1. An apparatus for managing vehicle speed comprising a computer processor, and a computer memory operatively coupled to the computer processor, the computer memory having disposed within it computer program instructions that, when executed by the computer processor, causes the apparatus to:
- determine a route grade and a route distance associated with a travel route of a vehicle;
determine at least one of a section grade and a section length for a plurality of route sections of a travel route for the vehicle based on at least a portion of each of the route grade and the route distance;
determine a cruise control speed mode for the vehicle for each of the plurality of route sections based on at least one of the section grade and the section length;
determine a speed reference command of the vehicle based on at least one of the cruise control speed mode, the section length, the section grade, a current speed and at least one of a sensed fuel level, a sensed engine condition, and a sensed environmental condition; and
issue a speed reference command to control a speed of the vehicle.

Abstract
Controlling a speed of a vehicle based on at least a portion of a route grade and a route distance divided into a plurality of route sections, each including at least one of a section grade and section length. Controlling the speed of the vehicle is further based on determining a cruise control speed mode for the vehicle for each of the plurality of route sections and determining a speed reference command of the vehicle based on at least one of the cruise control speed mode, the section length, the section grade, and a current speed.
