Abstract

Improved non-cellular (e.g., Wi-Fi) link integration with a cellular (e.g., LTE) network is described. The improved link integration can relate to utilizing an eNodeB device (e.g., residing in a radio access network portion of a cellular network) as an anchor point rather than a packet data network gateway device (e.g., residing in a core network portion of the cellular network) utilized by other approaches. The improved link integration can maintain full compliance with or support for other approaches, and can reduce signaling overhead, simplify quality-of-service management, and/or provide a more rapid reaction to changes of access, particularly in cases where the eNodeB device and a non-cellular access point device are co-located.

Claims

1. A mobile device, comprising:

a processor and

a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, facilitates performance of operations, comprising;

initiating establishment of a first communication path with an access point device that operates according to a protocol that differs from a long term evolution protocol;

determining that the access point device is co-located with an eNodeB device that operates according to the long term evolution protocol in connection with communication with a network device of a communication network;

initiating establishment of a second communication path with the eNodeB device;

receiving an indication that a secure tunnel has been established between the access point device and the eNodeB device, wherein the secure tunnel is a secure communication path between the access point device and the eNodeB device; and

transmitting outgoing data to the network device via a path that traverses the first communication path and the secure tunnel.

2. The mobile device of claim 1, wherein the network device is a gateway device for a defined core network portion of the communication network.

3. The mobile device of claim 1, wherein the determining that the access point device is co-located with the eNodeB device comprises determining that the access point device and the eNodeB device are physically co-located and comprise a common physical structure.

4. The mobile device of claim 1, wherein the determining that the access point device is co-located with the eNodeB device comprises determining that the access point device and the eNodeB device are topologically co-located with respect to a defined network topology.

5. The mobile device of claim 1, wherein the operations further comprise receiving incoming data from the network device via the path that traverses the first communication path and the secure tunnel.

The mobile device of claim 5, wherein the operations further comprise identifying bearers and links, wherein the bearers relate to first communication paths, in accordance with the long term evolution protocol, between a first device of the communication network and a second device of the communication network, and wherein the links relate to second communication paths comprising the first communication path, in accordance with the protocol the differs from the long term evolution protocol, between the mobile device and the access point device.

The mobile device of claim 6, wherein the operations further comprise constructing virtual tunnels between the mobile device and the eNodeB device, wherein the virtual tunnels relate to third communications paths between the mobile device and the eNodeB device that comprise the links between the mobile device and the access point device and correspond to respective bearers of the bearers.

8. The mobile device of claim 6, wherein the transmitting the outgoing data further comprises:

determining a bearer from the bearers associated with the outgoing data;

selecting the first communication path from the links for transmitting the outgoing data; and

tagging the outgoing data with tag information associated with the bearer.

9. The mobile device of claim 8, wherein the transmitting the outgoing data further comprises selecting another link from the links and transmitting the outgoing data via the first communication path and the other link.

10. The mobile device of claim 6, wherein the receiving incoming data further comprises:

employing tag information associated with a bearer of the bearers determined to be associated with the incoming information for identifying the bearer; and

inserting the incoming data in a queue associated with the bearer.

11. The mobile device of claim 10, wherein the receiving incoming data further comprises reformatting the incoming data based on a bearer protocol associated with the bearer, and wherein the bearer protocol is compliant with the long term evolution protocol.

12. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, facilitate performance of operations, comprising:

establishing a first communication path with user equipment in accordance with a long term evolution protocol for communication with a network device of a communication network that operates according to the long term evolution protocol;

receiving an indication that the user equipment has established a second communication path with an access point device that operates according to a different protocol that is different than the long term evolution protocol;

determining that the access point device is co-located with the eNodeB device;

establishing a secure tunnel with the access point device, wherein the secure tunnel is a secure communication path between the access point device and the eNodeB device;

receiving uplink data from the user equipment via the second communication path; and

transmitting the uplink data to the network device.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the network device is a gateway device for a core network portion of the communication network.

14. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the determining that the access point device is co-located comprises determining that the access point device and the eNodeB device are physically co-located and situated in a common physical structure.

15. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the determining that the access point device is co-located comprises determining that the access point device and the eNodeB device are topologically co-located with respect to a defined network topology.

16. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 12, wherein the receiving the uplink data comprises receiving the uplink data from the user equipment via the second communication path and the secure tunnel.

17. A method, comprising:

receiving, by a system comprising a processor, a first indication that a first communication path has been established between an access point device that operates according to a protocol that differs from a long term evolution protocol and a user equipment that supports the protocol and the long term evolution protocol;

receiving, by the system, a second indication that a second communication path has been established between the user equipment and an eNodeB device according to the long term evolution protocol;

determining, by the system, that the access point device and the eNodeB device are co-located;

receiving a third indication that a third communication path has been established between the access point device and the eNodeB device, wherein the third communication path is a secure tunnel between the access point device and the eNodeB device; and

facilitating, by the system, communication of data between the user equipment and a network device in a core network portion of a communication network via the third communication path.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the determining that the access point device and the eNodeB device are co-located comprises determining, by the system, that the access point device and the eNodeB device are physically co-located and comprise a common physical structure.

19. The method of claim 17, wherein the determining that the access point device and the eNodeB device are co-located comprises determining, by the system, that the access point device and the eNodeB device are topologically co-located with respect to a defined network topology.

20. The method of claim 17, wherein the facilitating the communication comprises facilitating, by the system, the communication of data between the user equipment and the network device via the third communication path and the first communication path.
