Abstract

A towel dispenser includes a housing for receiving toweling. The housing includes a main body; a loading door that is configured to rotate relative to the main body between a closed position and an open position; and a guide system that includes a first roller attached to the main body and a second roller attached to the loading door. The towel dispenser may include a motor for driving dispensing of the toweling from the housing and an associated sensor. The towel dispenser can be mounted to an underside of a cabinet. In an aspect, the front wall of the main body and a lip of the loading door collectively define a gap to which the guiding system guides the toweling and through which towels are dispensed when the loading door is in the closed position.

Claims

1. A towel dispenser, comprising:

(a) a housing for receiving toweling, wherein the toweling includes a first towel and a second towel that are connected together and separable at a perforation formed between the first towel and the second towel, the dispenser being configured to define a path for the toweling within the housing;

(b) a motor positioned within the housing;

(c) a sensor for sensing the perforation and generating a signal indicative of the presence of the perforation; and

(d) a controller positioned within the housing and electrically connected to the motor and to the sensor;

(e) wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the motor after the sensor generates the signal indicative of the presence of the perforation; and

(f) further comprising a drive roller and a sensor roller, wherein the toweling contacts the drive roller along the path after it contacts the sensor roller along the path, wherein the motor drives the drive roller and the sensor roller such that the toweling extending along the path between the drive roller and the sensor roller is sufficiently tensioned so as to expand the perforation when in proximity to the sensor.

2. A towel dispenser according to claim 1, wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the motor a predetermined period of time after receiving the signal.

3. A towel dispenser according to claim 2, wherein the predetermined period of time is sufficient for the perforation to exit the housing.

4. A towel dispenser according to claim 2, further comprising a separation device, wherein the predetermined period of time is sufficient for the perforation to be aligned with the separation device.

5. A towel dispenser according to claim 4, wherein the separation device is an edge positioned near the path.

6. The towel dispenser according to claim 1, wherein the sensor roller comprises means for expanding a perforation.

The towel dispenser according to claim 6, wherein the means for expanding a perforation comprises a centrally formed circumferential ridge disposed between two end sections, each end sections having a first diameter and the ridge having a second diameter greater than the first diameter for expanding the perforation as the toweling passes over the sensor roller.

8. The towel dispenser according to claim 1, wherein the perforation comprises a score.

9. The towel dispenser according to claim 1, wherein the perforation comprises a row of openings formed in the toweling.

10. The towel dispenser according to claim 1, further comprising a proximity sensor, wherein the controller activates the motor for dispensing toweling in response to a signal generated by the proximity sensor.

11. The towel dispenser according to claim 1, wherein a predetermined number of instances of detection of a perforation occur before the motor is deactivated by the controller, whereby toweling including a predetermined number of connected towels are dispensed during a single dispensing cycle.

12. A towel dispenser, comprising:

(a) a housing for receiving toweling, wherein the toweling includes a plurality of towels that are connected together and separable at perforations formed therebetween, the dispenser being configured to define a path for the toweling;

(b) a motor positioned within the housing;

(c) a sensor for sensing a perforation;

(d) a controller electrically connected to the motor and to the sensor;

(e) a sensor roller and a drive roller, each having outer surfaces that define a portion of the path with the sensor being located between the sensor roller and the drive roller along the path;

(f) wherein the sensor is configured to generate a signal indicative of the presence of a perforation, and wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the motor in response to a generated signal by the sensor; and

(g) wherein the motor is configured to drive the drive roller at a first surface speed and the sensor roller at a second surface speed that is less than the first surface speed such that toweling extending along the path between the drive roller and the sensor roller is sufficiently tensioned so as to expand a perforation when in proximity to the sensor.

A towel dispenser according to claim 12, wherein the sensor roller is generally cylindrical and defines a first diameter at each of a first end and a second end, and defines a second diameter between the first end and the second end, wherein the second diameter is greater than the first diameter.

14. A towel dispenser according to claim 13, wherein the second diameter is defined by a ridge formed between the first end and the second end of the sensor roller.

15. The towel dispenser according to claim 12, wherein the perforation comprises a score.

16. The towel dispenser according to claim 12, wherein the perforation comprises a row of openings formed in the toweling.

17. The towel dispenser according to claim 12, further comprising a proximity sensor, wherein the controller activates the motor for dispensing toweling in response to a signal generated by the proximity sensor.

18. A method of dispensing towels from a dispenser, comprising the steps of,

(a) providing a dispenser comprising,

(i) a housing for containing toweling, wherein the toweling includes a plurality of towels that are connected together and are separable at perforations formed therebetween, the dispenser being configured to define a path for the toweling,

(ii) a motor for dispensing the toweling,

(iii) a controller configured to control the motor, including activating and deactivating the motor,

(iv) a sensor for sensing perforations and configured to generate signals to the controller indicative of the presence of perforations near the sensor,

(v) a drive roller configured to be driven by the motor, and

(vi) a sensor roller configured to be driven by the motor, wherein the toweling contacts the drive roller and the sensor roller along the path and wherein the sensor is located between the drive roller and the sensor roller along the path;

(b) using the controller, activating the motor to propel the toweling along the path, including opening a perforation when such perforation is near the sensor by driving the drive roller and the sensor roller with a surface speed of the drive roller being greater than a surface speed of the sensor roller such that tension is applied to an extent of the toweling between the drive roller and the sensor roller; and

(c) using the controller, deactivating the motor after the sensor generates a signal indicating the presence of a perforation.

19. A method of dispensing towels according to claim 18, wherein the controller is configured to deactivate the motor a predetermined period of time after the signal is generated by the sensor.

20. A method of dispensing towels according to claim 18, further comprising the step of:

after the sensor generates the signal, driving the drive roller until the perforation has traveled along the path past the drive roller to an exterior of the housing, whereupon the motor is deactivated.
