1. A method, comprising:

  • disposing a material between a first portion of tissue of a subject and a second portion of tissue of the subject;

    separating the first portion of tissue from the second portion of tissue; and

    exposing the first portion of tissue to an energy at an intensity sufficient to treat the first portion of tissue, while the material allows the energy to penetrate the second portion of tissue at a reduced energy intensity insufficient to treat the second portion of tissue,wherein the material is selected from at least one member of the group consisting of deionized water, a buffered saline solution, a liquid polymer, a gel, particles, a foam, and a gas; and

    wherein the first portion of tissue comprises an unhealthy or unwanted tissue and the second portion of tissue comprises a healthy or wanted tissue.
